Dog Paws on AsphaltWith summer months approaching, more people may want to take advantage of the warm weather by taking their dog for a walk. Walking your dog is not only a great way to get exercise but is a perfect opportunity to bond with your furry friend.

However, during the summer months it is important for dog owners to be aware that many outside surfaces can potentially burn their dog's footpads. Concrete, metal, pavement, sand and especially asphalt can be treacherous for their paws when it is hot outside. Asphalt can easily reach 125 degrees during a sunny 75-degree day.

A good rule of thumb is to place your bare hand on the surface for 10 seconds. If it feels too hot and is uncomfortable to you, chances are it is too hot and uncomfortable for your dog.

It is also important to remember that dogs do not sweat like people. Instead they perspire through their paws, so the longer they are on hot surfaces the harder it is for them to cool down.

Here are a few tips to keep your pooch safe:

  • Go on walks early in the morning or later in the evening.
  • Keep mid-day walks short.
  • Stay in the shade.
  • Avoid asphalt as much as possible.
  • Let your dog walk on the grass alongside the asphalt or sidewalk if need be.
  • Summer booties can keep their paws cool and protected.
If an accident occurs and you notice blisters or sores on their footpads, seek veterinary care immediately to prevent infection.

With these helpful tips in mind, you and your canine companion will be able to enjoy each other's company worry free during your summer walks.
