Special Victims Unit

SVU FlyerThe Aurora Police Department’s Special Victims Unit is committed to public safety, and enhancing the quality of life, for our at-risk citizens, through enforcement and education. We will relentlessly identify those offenders who prey on our at-risk community and seek to immediately stop the damage, suffering, or illegal wrongdoing, to promote a more secure environment for our at-risk community.

The Special Victims Unit consist of several officers, one detective, and a volunteer supervised by a sergeant.  

The Special Victims Unit investigates crimes of abuse, caretaker neglect, and exploitation of at-risk elders and at-risk adults with an intellectual or developmental disability (I/DD).  

Who is an at-risk elder?

An at-risk elder is any person who is 70 years of age or older.

Who is an at-risk adult with an I/DD?

At-risk adults with an I/DD are person 18 years of age or older who have been diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disorder before the age of 22 which include, Autism Spectrum disorder, Cerebral Palsy, or Down Syndrome to name a few.

Reporting Abuse and the Rules

Professionals who observe the abuse or exploitation or have reasonable cause to believe that an at-risk elder has been abused are required to report to law enforcement within 24 hours after making the observation or discovery. Professionals are also encouraged to report to adult protective services.

Failure to report is a Class 3 misdemeanor which could have a monetary fine of $750.00

As a law enforcement agency we are required to notify the adult protection services and the district attorney with in 24 hours of receiving the report.

Mandatory Reporting

If you are required by Colorado Revised Statute 18-6.5-108 to report what you suspect or believe to be the mistreatment of an At-Risk Elder (70 or older) or an At-Risk Adult with I/DD, and you do NOT believe that the person is at imminent risk of death or serious bodily injury, click the below link to submit your report. A unique incident tracking number will be generated and you will receive an email with a copy of your report and incident tracking number for your records as well.
