FEMA Preliminary Flood Hazard Data

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) on Dec. 12, 2014, to reflect updated flood hazard information. Legal notice of these proposed revisions has been published in the Aurora Sentinel, the Federal Register and on FEMA’s website. A 90-day appeal period begins on June 18, 2015, during which time the flood hazard determinations may be appealed on the basis of technical information. Following completion of the appeal period and resolution of any appeals received, FEMA will issue new FIRMs with an effective date approximately six months into the future.

Copies of the preliminary FIRM, Flood Insurance Study and digital data may be obtained from the title link above. Hard copies are also available for inspection in the Engineering Division of Public Works, at 15151 E. Alameda Parkway, Suite 3200, Aurora, Colorado 80012. Not all projects require a traffic impact study. The Applicant should review the Pre-Application notes for the project to determine if a study is required. If a traffic impact study is required it shall be stamped by a registered professional engineer and submitted with the Development Application.

Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program

About the Program:

The City of Aurora’s Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program aims to respond to resident concerns regarding speeding and cut-through traffic on residential (local and collector) streets and improve the quality of life in neighborhoods using a set of traffic calming strategies. 

Strategies range from enforcement and educational actions to a more comprehensive physical infrastructure approach. 

Traffic calming tools include permanent speed radar signs, speed cushions, mini roundabouts, full intersection closures, and others, and are applied based on the local roadway and land use context and specific project need.

The primary focus of the program is to verify eligible projects that are well supported by the community and that properly address identified safety criteria.

What is a Traffic Control Plan?

A traffic control plan is a technical diagram with information about how to occupy the public right of way.

    The regulations for traffic control plans are set forth in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and the city of Aurora Specification (available on the city’s website)
    There are many private companies who design and implement traffic control plans in the city of Aurora.
Do I need a Traffic Control Plan for the permit I’m applying for?
    No: If you are not impacting the public right-of-way (streets, sidewalk or alleys). You do not need a traffic control plan for private streets.
    Yes: You are impacting the public right of way.

Curb Cut/driveway requests

I want to put in a new driveway (curb cut) for my property.

Please contact the Engineer on Call (EOC) at 303-739-7575 for general review of Code requirements like type of street accessing with request (local ok proceed further, collector or arterial not likely to be allowed); general sight distance considerations; etc. The EOC will get more detailed information including contact information and refer to the Traffic Engineering Department if further review is required. Traffic Engineering staff will contact the citizen regarding their request within two weeks or less. Permits and other documents are also likely to be required for installations of this type
