The city of Aurora invites the community to take part in the annual Party for Pollinators from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 27 at the Aurora Water-wise Garden, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway. The garden is located on the east side of the Aurora Municipal Center.

This annual event takes place during Pollinator Week, June 22 to June 28, which is designed to celebrate the vital role pollinators play in our ecosystems, economies and agriculture. Attendees will be able to partake in a variety of fun activities, community projects, garden tours, learning experiences and much more. A selection of food trucks will also be on site for visitors to enjoy. This all-ages event is free, and no registration is required.

Aurora Water Conservation Specialist and Water-wise Garden Manager, Amanda Slover, said the water-wise garden’s team is excited to have the public learn more about the plants that serve our pollinators." Our native pollinators prefer water-wise plants to thirsty Kentucky bluegrass,” she said. “The Aurora Water-wise Garden celebrates pollinators every day by using low water plants that make for great habitats and snacks.”

A variety of pollinator-centric events take place throughout the year, such as informational pollinator walks and migration tagging science projects during the annual monarch migration. The majority of these events, including the Party for Pollinators, are led by Aurora naturalist, David Footle.

“Nature can inspire in so many ways, and during times of adversity, with drought and water restrictions weighing heavy on peoples’ minds, I often think about native pollinators; these incredible animals embody the concept of adapting since they are often the best adapted to pollinating our native plants,” Footle said. “They also are facing countless challenges, and it’s important for people to work to protect them; and thus, I’m reminded of some keys to facing tough times: adapt to the challenges you are facing and come together to work towards a common goal, just like our pollinator friends do.”

The city of Aurora is dedicated to facilitating conservation efforts year-round to support local pollinators. Efforts include enhancing environments, creating safe migration spaces, educational materials about pollinators and providing resources to help community members become advocates for our often-unsung heroes.

Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman has signed the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge in years past and took the pledge again in 2025.
