Central Recreation Center Park SiteAerial map of Central Recreation Center Park Site
The city of Aurora is making plans to design and construct a new park near the Central Recreation Center (18150 E. Vassar Place). This 12-acre park will add to the recreation center project by providing outdoor recreation activities and spaces for citizens. The park design will complement and enhance the existing recreation center. The project is currently in the master planning phase. The park is expected to be completed in late 2023.
Project highlights may include:
- Playgrounds for all ages and abilities
- Open play areas
- Concrete trails with connections to the park, the recreation center and regional trail system
- Picnic areas with shade structures, tables and grills
- Improvements to the nearby irrigation pond and the adjacent Hutchinson Channel greenbelts, up to and possibly including the removal of the pond and converting bluegrass to native grasses along the channel
- Aurora Water will partner with PROS at the public meeting(s) in regards to the irrigation pond and Hutchinson Channel

High Line Canal North Trail Renovations
This priority project will construct nearly two miles of multi-use trail to close the gap between Colfax Avenue and recent improvements constructed north of I-70. Major features include a new trail overpass to cross I-70 east of Tower Road and a new pedestrian bridge over the High Line Canal south of Smith Road. An enhanced at-grade railroad crossing north of Smith Road will benefit cyclists and pedestrians. Building this priority section of the trail will complete one of the final gaps in the 71-mile High Line Canal Trail system.

The project is currently in the design phase with construction anticipated to begin in Summer 2022. Trail completion is expected in Spring 2023. For more information and ways to engage, visit EngageAurora.org/HLCT.

Overpass for High Plains Trail
Construction on the High Plains Trail connector project began in April 2022 and is expected to be completed by Fall 2022. This $5.2 million multimodal project will connect two major regional trails including the Cherry Creek Regional Trail and the High Plains Trail. The first phase of the regional connection project will take approximately six months to complete and install a grade-separated overcrossing at Parker Road, which will connect to the existing Cherry Creek Regional Trail. Work will begin just north of Preservation Park & Trailhead and will move east across S. Parker Road (near mile marker 63). Planned improvements include: pedestrian bridge installation, trail enhancements, and landscape/irrigation improvements.
