Weekly Programs


Morning at the Museum
Every Wednesday, 10:30 - 11:15 a.m.

Spend the morning with your preschooler at the Aurora History Museum for stories, crafts and hands-on activities. A new program is offered every week. Please note, children must be supervised by an adult.
Free, no registration required.

Coal Creek School Days
Fridays in June, July and August, 10:30 a.m

Coal Creek School Days are back! Beginning on June 6, Aurora History Musuem and Historic Sites will open the historic Coal creek Schoolhouse for fun kid-focused programming on Fridays. With new programs presented by different organizations, there’s something new to do each week. No program on July 4.

History Hike: High Line Canal at DeLaney
Saturday, June 7, 9:30 a.m.

Explore the High Line Canal and the homestead site it once irrigated on this walk around the DeLaney Farm Historic District. Join the museum and the High Line Canal Conservancy for a 2-mile walk around property to discuss history, water and wildlife.

Yarn and Yap: The Community Effort to Create Jewell Wetlands
June 21, 11 a.m.

Bring your current knitting or crochet project to work on while we discuss the amazing community effort that went into creating Jewell Wetlands. Today Jewell Wetlands is a park with trails, a boardwalk and a butterfly garden, but not long ago it was slated for development. Discover the work that went into creating this park we all enjoy.

Explore what life was like in early Aurora by visiting the Queen Anne style Centennial House, built in 1891 by Aurora’s founder, Donald Fletcher.

Legendary Ladies 
June 21, 4 p.m.

The costumed performers and researchers of Legendary Ladies portray important women from Colorado History. This Civic Season, we’re hosting homesteader and cattle rustler, Jodie Bassett, Utopian author, Miriam Colt Davis, WWI Army Signal Corps operator, Merle Anderson, and opera singer, Lillian Russel.

Discover Aurora’s agricultural past at DeLaney Farm. This site contains the Gully Home, the oldest building standing in Aurora and the only known round barn in the state of Colorado.

Tallyn’s Reach Movie Night: Dinosaur Double Feature
June 28, 2 p.m.

We’re celebrating our “Prehistoric Aurora” exhibit by teaming up with Tallyn’s Reach library for two iconic dinosaur movies in one day. “The Land Before Time,” (G) begins at 2 p.m. followed by “Jurassic Park,” (PG-13) starting at 3:30 p.m. Join in the family friendly fun of movie night and celebrate prehistoric Aurora.

Special Hours for Independence Day
July 4, 4 to 8 p.m.
Come out to the Aurora Municipal Center early to save your seat for fireworks and visit the museum while you wait. We’ll be open ahead of the main event so you can brush up on your local history while you celebrate American independence.

“Aurora’s Short Track” Exhibit Opening Car Show
July 12, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Aurora History Museum is hosting a car show to highlight car culture in Aurora as we open our exhibit “Aurora’s Short Track: Century 21 Speedway. Explore the history of racing in Aurora and come see historic vehicles and modern hot-rods in our parking lot.

History Hike: Star K Ranch and the Wild Neighbors
July 19, 9 a.m.
Did you know that Aurora once had an alligator farm on Smith Road? Discover the surprising history of the land that today is Star K Ranch and about the plants and animals that call Aurora home. This hike is ADA accessible.

Did you know that some American settlers in Colorado found so little wood for construction that they used the earth and plants of the high plains to build homes? See how topography and ecology led to the construction, use and longevity of sod homes for homesteaders in the late 19th century.

You’ll need to guess the year based on what you see (car models, stores, fashion, hair styles and trends). Here's the catch: we don't have dates for every object or photograph in our collection; we are counting on you to help us narrow down the time frame! @AuroraHistoryCO on all platforms.

Geocaches

Find geocaches located at Aurora Landmarks No. 5, No. 9, No. 11 and No. 26 using Geocaching.com. After you find the cache, visit the Aurora History Museum during regular business hours and receive a limited edition coin for each geocache you find. We showcase a different historic landmark every year, so start your collection today!
Coins are limited and are available on a first come, first serve basis. You do not need to pick up the coin on the same day you find the cache.
