Posted on 05/12/2025

(May 12, 2025) – An Aurora Police Department patrol officer responding Monday to a report of a suspicious person at a northeast Aurora business was involved in a fatal shooting.

About 3 p.m. Monday, Aurora911 received a call about a suspicious person trespassing at an offsite airport parking lot in the 19900 block of East 56th Avenue. The caller reported there was a male on the property checking vehicle door handles and refusing to leave.

An Aurora police patrol officer responded about 5:15 p.m. Once at the scene, staff members reported the suspect was still on the property and was becoming more aggressive with employees.

The officer located the suspect and attempted to speak with him. About one minute later, the suspect charged the officer and there was a fight. Aurora911 received additional calls from people at the parking lot reporting that an officer needed help.

The officer attempted to use less lethal devices to gain control of the suspect. Those attempts were unsuccessful. The officer also gave the suspect multiple commands, but the suspect refused to follow the officer’s directions, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Additional officers responded and provided first aid to the suspect until medical responders arrived at the scene. The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. The suspect died shortly after his arrival at the hospital. He will be identified by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.

The officer also was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries he sustained during the fight. He will be placed on paid administrative leave upon his release from the hospital, which is in accordance with agency policy.

The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is leading an independent investigation of the officer-involved shooting to determine whether the officer’s actions complied with state law.

The Aurora Police Department’s Internal Investigations Bureau is conducting an administrative investigation to determine whether the officer’s actions complied with agency policies and training.

The investigations are active and ongoing. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867). Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
