City of Aurora announces furlough and MLK Jr. Day closures

The first of four city of Aurora furlough days in 2026 will take place Friday, Jan. 16, as part of cost-saving measures approved in the city’s 2026 budget. Most city facilities and operations will be closed, with essential services and emergency operations remaining fully operational.
Furlough days are one of several strategies the city is using to responsibly manage its budget while continuing to deliver high-quality services to the community, supporting the city’s Well Managed strategic outcome.
The remaining furlough days in 2026 are: Friday, April 10; Thursday, July 2; and Thursday, Dec. 24. For more information about furlough days, visit AuroraGov.org/Furloughs.
Additionally, some city of Aurora facilities will be closed or operate on adjusted hours Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Aurora Public Library no longer charges late fees on overdue items; no holds expire on closed days.

On city holidays, payment for parking at on-street parking meters and commuter pay permit zones is not required. All other posted regulatory parking restrictions remain in effect and are enforced.
Not affected by the holiday closures are the Detention Center, Police, Fire Rescue and Public Safety Communications operations.
