Aurora Fire Rescue reopens Station 9

Aurora Fire Rescue Station 9 reopens as new, two-story facility in Ward III

AURORA, Colo. – Less than a year after the original firehouse was demolished and replaced by new construction, Aurora Fire Rescue today announced that Fire Station 9 at 17200 E. Mexico Ave. is back in service.

Built in 1979, the original firehouse was demolished on March 18, 2025. It operated as a single-company house, with one fire engine and a four-person crew, serving the community for nearly five decades. Originally designed with an open bunk room, it was later retrofitted with individual dorm rooms, though limited space left no room for doors.

A longtime cornerstone of Aurora's Ward III community, a 2016 facility assessment concluded Station 9's previous structure no longer met the needs of the department of its personnel. Over the years, shifting soil caused structural damage, including cracks and gaps between walls and floors, further exacerbating the station's inadequacy and ultimately prompting the decision to build a new station rather than renovate the existing space.

The new two-story, 12,000-square-foot facility features 11 dorm rooms, eight bathrooms, a fitness room, a kitchen, dining areas, a day room, offices, and a state-of-the-art, double-length 3-bay apparatus bay. Designed with future expansion in mind, the new station will allow space for an additional firefighting company if needed. The $9.3 million project was funded primarily through the American Rescue Plan Act.

During construction, Engine 9’s crew continued serving the local community from their temporary base at Station 8. The crew has now returned to Station 9 and is enjoying the safer, more comfortable and better equipped facility.

A ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration is planned for 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, to provide an opportunity for the community to see the new space. The event is open to the public and will feature a dedication ceremony followed by tours of the firehouse, as well as opportunities to climb aboard the fire engine and meet Aurora’s firefighters.
