The city of Aurora's pet limit is for the entire household. A combination of different animals is allowed but cannot exceed the limit for each species.

  • Dogs - 4

  • Cats - 5

  • Ferrets - 3

  • Rabbits - 2

  • Chickens - 6

  • Ducks - 2



Aurora Pit Bull ban to be decided in November 2024 election

American Staffordshire Terrier

On July 22, 2024, the Aurora City Council passed a resolution adding a measure to the November 2024 ballot on whether to allow pit bulls in the city.

Pending an appeal of a court ruling and the November referendum, city policy currently allows residents to adopt and own American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier dogs inside city limits.

Livestock

Livestock is not permitted unless allowed by zoning provisions of the City Code. Livestock includes but is not limited to horses, donkeys, llamas, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, peacocks, turkeys, roosters, pigeons, geese or other poultry, fowl or mink. Hens and ducks are allowed; however, a permit is required prior to having hens and ducks your property. For more information on owning hens visit the Chickens and Ducks webpage.



Exotic Animals

Exotic, dangerous, and wild animals cannot be owned, sold, possessed or harbored within the city limits. Such animals include, but are not limited to:

  • Poisonous or venomous animals

  • Nonvenomous snakes over six feet long from tip of nose to end of tail.

  • Other reptiles longer than three feet from tip of nose to end of tail.

  • Primates

  • Bears

  • Marsupials, squirrels, raccoons, porcupines, skunks, badgers, or other like species (except for ferrets).

  • Any feline species that is not commonly classified as a domesticated house cat (i.e., lion, tiger, bobcat, lynx, etc.).

  • Foxes, wolves, wolf hybrids, coyotes, or other canine species other than dogs.

  • Crocodilians and monitor lizards.
