Adoptions & Promotions

We understand the fun, excitement and joy of adopting a new pet. The Aurora Animal Shelter is happy to be a part of that experience. If you are looking to adopt, adopters are strongly encouraged to visit the shelter. Adoptions are all on a first come, first serve basis, no appointments are required. Please note that our kennels are not available for walk-throughs, however, our available animals are posted on our Adoption Wall. Interested adopters will be able to gather more information about any pet listed on the wall and will be able to meet the pet in person. Adopters are also welcome to call our shelter line 303.326.8280 for more information on an animal prior to heading down to meet them.

Our available animals can also be viewed online at the links posted below.

Attention Cat Lovers
: We utilize several PetSmart and Petco stores in the metro area. If you see a cat on the website there is a chance it could be at one of these locations. Click on the desired cat's photo and the location will be noted in the cat's information IF the cat is at a PetSmart or Petco. If you need assistance in locating where an animal is being housed, please call us and we will be happy to assist you.

Before you begin the process of searching for a new pet. Here are a few useful tips to keep in mind when selecting the right pet for you and your family: A few things to consider when adopting a new dog.

Adoption Process

  • You must be at least 18 years of age to adopt.
  • Adoptions are based on a first come first serve basis. We do not offer holds for interested adopters and we do not have a waiting list for specific breeds.
  • Prior to the visit, a member of our team will speak with you to go over any additional information about the animal.
  • A visit is required. If possible we ask that you bring your children and any dogs that live in your household. Dogs must remained leashed at all times. If your dog is on a flexi leash we ask that it remained locked and no longer than 6 feet.
  • To ensure you have plenty of time to meet the pet and complete the adoption process, each day adoption visits end an hour before close (or earlier depending on weather/light conditions).
  • If the visit goes well and you are interested in adopting, we require a valid photo ID to begin the adoption process.
  • The adoption process generally takes 20 minutes for us to go over the adoption contract with you.
  • The adoption fees are collected at the end of our adoption process by cash, check or card.
  • If you have any questions regarding our adoption process, please call us at 303.326.8280.
