Map of 13th Avenue corridor and three parks targeted for renovation

The city of Aurora will host an open house July 16 to share information and gather input on projects for safer mobility and upgraded parks along and near the 13th Avenue corridor.

Residents may stop by the open house anytime from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Vaughn Elementary School, 1155 Vaughn St., to enjoy free ice cream, review the progress to date and give feedback as design of these projects move forward. A Spanish interpreter will be available at the open house.

The first project aims to improve transportation safety, access, and reliability for all travel modes on East 13th Avenue. The project extends along four blocks of East 12th Avenue from Yosemite Street to the east, then along East 13th Avenue to the High Line Canal Trail just east of Chambers Road.

Based on the 13th Avenue Multimodal Mobility Study (completed in 2023), the city is starting to design upgrades, including widened sidewalks, enhanced crosswalks, a shared use path, improved lighting, and other improvements. The preliminary (60%) corridor design will be shared at the meeting, and public comments will help guide the final design.

A 1-mile-long section will be fully (100%) designed, with the remaining corridor designed to 60%. The city will select the 1-mile section based on public input and technical considerations. Construction timing depends on funding availability.

Additionally, the city is beginning the planning process for improvements at Freedom Park, Havana Park and General's Park, all near the East 13th Avenue corridor. The projects represent an investment in neighborhood parks and will help ensure these community spaces continue to meet the needs of residents.

As planning gets underway, the city is seeking community input to help identify priorities and opportunities for future improvements. Feedback gathered during the planning process will help guide project development and inform the vision for each park.

Those needing accommodations to participate should contact [email protected] or call 720.225.4651.

Meeting exhibits will be posted to the project webpages July 16, and online comments are requested by Aug. 6. For more information or to submit a comment online starting July 16, visit EngageAurora.org/13th and EngageAurora.org/WardOneParks
