According to Aurora Water's ongoing lead and galvanized steel water service line investigations, as well as city and state records, we've noted the following:
- Buildings constructed prior to 1960 have a higher likelihood of having a lead or galvanized steel water service lines.
- Buildings constructed between 1960 to 1986 are less likely to have lead or galvanized steel water service lines.
- Buildings constructed after 1986 should not be made of lead as it was federally banned from use in water service lines.
Although potholing, or when Aurora Water or our contractor, AGL Construction, digs two, 6-inch holes on the property owner's and the city's water service lines, is the most accurate way of determining if your property has water service lines that may contain lead, you can also do a self inspection to determine the material.
