From students to moms to retirees and everyone in between, the city of Aurora’s Parks, Recreation and Open Space department is seeking diverse and dedicated lifeguards for all indoor and outdoor pools. Are you ready to take the plunge and gain lifelong skills?
“Our guards keep community members safe while increasing their swimming skills and growing a lifelong passion for aquatics,” said Aquatics Superintendent, Ben Goldstein. “Hiring more lifeguards means we can keep our pools open more regularly throughout the summer, allowing families to enjoy our facilities, spend time together and make unforgettable memories.”
The hiring rate for this position is $17.50 per hour. Benefits for this position include free access to city recreation centers, free equipment, uniforms and career advancement opportunities. The position also promises flexible work schedules, which is exactly what retired nurse and swim club enthusiast, Gayle Turner, was looking for.
“There are a lot of people my age that swim and this is a job they can do,” she said. “It involves some stuff that takes me out of my comfort zone, but it’s a good job with a lot of flexibility.”
Applicants will quickly find their comfort zone with paid training, licenses and certifications that are provided as part of the onboarding process. Lifeguard training will cover first aid, CPR for the professional rescuer and emergency oxygen administration. Upon completion of courses, lifeguards will possess valuable knowledge of pool safety, emergency action plans, life-saving techniques and emergency response skills.
Lifeguards also perform routine tasks to maintain the safety and cleanliness of swimming pools, provide patron information and respond to emergencies. Additionally, they may train to teach swim lessons, coach swim teams and advance to management positions.
Leadership opportunities come in many forms as an Aurora lifeguard. At the age of 18, Thade Holmes is the city’s youngest headguard. However, that doesn’t stop him from acting as a role model for others.
“As a lifeguard and a headguard, I have learned to be a more caring and open person,” Holmes said. “I also have a better handle on resolving conflicts more peacefully.”
