Aurora Public Library is excited to announce the official launch of its brand-new Bookmobile with a city tour. The Bookmobile will be taken to various locations throughout Aurora from Feb. 23 to 25. The kickoff by city officials will take place at the west steps of the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway, at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23.

The inaugural tour will include stops at each city Ward: 1 p.m. Feb. 23 at The Gardens on Havana; 10 a.m. Feb. 24 at Stanley Marketplace; 2 p.m. Feb. 24 at Soccer City Aurora; 9 a.m. Feb. 25 at Meadow Hills Golf Course; and 1 p.m. Feb. 25 at Red-tailed Hawk Park.

“The new Bookmobile helps Aurora Public Library meet people where they are by bringing library services to them, especially to those who can’t access a physical library location,” said Midori Clark, director of Library and Cultural Services.

Library services offered at the Bookmobile include checking out items or picking up items on hold, signing up for a library card, accessing the internet for free, getting questions answered by library staff and more.

The state-of-the-art vehicle is about 120 square feet and includes a Wi-Fi connection, a sound system, a lift for book carts and a large awning to provide outdoor space. All of this is made possible largely through the generous donation of Joan M. Schobert, an avid reader and library patron, after her passing in 2019. The project started before the pandemic and was completed in late 2022.

The first noted Aurora Public Bookmobile came online in June 1959 thanks to the perseverance of the library board with Chairman Martin E. Miller at its helm. This Bookmobile held nearly 3,000 items and circulated 1,620 items in its first month. The last Aurora Public Library Bookmobile was retired in the late 1980s.

The addition of the Bookmobile is one of the various initiatives Aurora Public Library has implemented to enhance community services this year. Other initiatives include expanded operating hours at Aurora Central and Tallyn’s Reach libraries, the opening of Chambers Plaza Library and the fine-free policy on overdue items to make library services more accessible to the Aurora community.
