Police Chief Search: Community Input Sought

Police Chief Search: Community Input Sought
Posted on 06/08/2022

The firm hired by the city of Aurora to conduct a national search for the city’s next police chief is launching a community survey today and will host a public forum Tuesday, June 14, to seek the community’s input. Residents, businesses and community partners are encouraged to help the city define the qualities, experience and values it will seek in the next chief.

Public Sector Search & Consulting, Inc. (PSSC) is a California-based consultancy that specializes in the recruitment of police executives. It will work with the city management team and Interim Chief Daniel J. Oates, who served as Aurora’s police chief from 2005 to 2014, in identifying exemplary police chief applicants who will be effective in building morale at the Aurora Police Department, maintaining transparency with the media and the community, furthering the city’s comprehensive, systemic public safety changes, and tackling crime concerns across the city.

“I want the right person for the job, someone who will simultaneously support our dedicated police officers and provide the level of public safety our community deserves,” City Manager Jim Twombly said. “We will be thoughtful and thorough in our search for a new chief, and the community’s input is a crucial first step.”

Under the city charter, the city manager is responsible for hiring a police chief and receiving approval from the majority of the city council. City management plans to name a new chief this fall.

PSSC has conducted more than 40 police executive searches in recent years in major U.S. cities like San Jose, California, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Albuquerque, New Mexico, but it also has recent experience working with the cities of Northglenn, Boulder, Thornton and Wheat Ridge in Colorado.
