APD Investigating Sextortion Case

UPDATE: Arrest Made: Aurora Police Detectives Investigating ‘Sextortion’ Case at Local Schools
Posted on 01/22/2024

(Dec. 12, 2024) – The Aurora Police Department Internet Crimes Against Children Unit announced Thursday it has made an arrest in its nearly year-long “sextortion” investigation.

Jamir Deante Bright, 18, of Aurora, was arrested last Friday by Aurora police’s Direct Action Response Team on an active felony warrant for two charges related to child exploitation and one charge related to criminal extortion, all felonies. The charges, filed in Arapahoe District Court, stem from an Internet Crimes Against Children investigation that was launched in January after Aurora Police Department School Resource Officers received numerous reports of sextortion targeting students at several local schools.

Sextortion is a form of exploitation where children are blackmailed most often through the threat of publishing an explicit image. Sextortion could also involve sharing sexually explicit images with others in exchange for money. The investigation determined victims were targeted with both types of sextortion in this case.

Aurora police detectives, Homeland Security Investigations, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the Denver District Attorney’s Office partnered on the exhaustive investigation, which included the execution of numerous residential search warrants and the filing of multiple courts orders and subpoenas for online records. Several electronic devices were seized and examined, and countless social media profiles were searched to identify suspects.

Investigators ultimately identified Bright as the primary suspect in the case. Investigators also identified two minor-aged accomplices, including a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old, who both reside in Denver. The juveniles face charges in Aurora Municipal Court.

Bright is out of custody on $10,000 bond. The accomplices are not being identified because they are minors.

The Aurora Police Department Internet Crimes Against Children Unit partners with Homeland Security Investigations and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation as part of the Colorado Cyber Guardian Task Force. The task force is comprised of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in the Denver metro area focusing on child exploitation and child sex trafficking investigations.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867). Tipsters can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.

Aurora Police Detectives Investigating ‘Sextortion’ Case at Local Schools

(Jan. 22, 2024) – The Aurora Police Department Internet Crimes Against Children Unit is investigating numerous reports of “sextortion” targeting Aurora students.

Sextortion is a form of exploitation where children are blackmailed most often through the threat of publishing an explicit image. A scammer could threaten to post explicit material on the internet or social media unless they receive money from their targeted victim. Sextortion could also involve sharing sexually explicit images with others in exchange for money.

The sextortion scheme was first reported on Jan. 16, 2024, to an Aurora Police Department School Resource Officer. To date, detectives have received reports related to the investigation from students and officials at Rangeview, Smoky Hill, Gateway, Vista Peak, Cherokee Trail and Overland high schools, and Aurora Hills and Mrachek middle schools.

In six instances, students reported being a direct target of the sextortion scheme after being contacted by the suspect or suspects through Instagram. In dozens of others, students reported receiving unsolicited invitations to pay to join an Instagram “Close Friends List” where sexually explicit material had been posted. Close Friends is a feature that allows users to view an account holder’s private content.

Detectives are working closely with officials from Aurora Public Schools and the Cherry Creek School District to identify additional victims. Detectives also are working with Meta to identify the owners of the suspect profiles and to determine the legitimacy of photos and videos that have already been shared or otherwise publicly posted.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with any information is asked to contact a detective by calling Aurora non-emergency dispatch, 303.627.3100, and referencing case number AP2024-10276. Information can also be shared anonymously through the Safe2Tell website.
