Cat Basics

Stray Lost Cats

Pets that stray from their owner's property and are running loose are referred to as strays. These strays are typically nice felines and are used to human interaction. A stray cat that has been found can be brought to the Aurora Animal Shelter during normal business hours. Please be advised that our Animal Protection Officers will not chase cats as they are nearly impossible to catch.

Running at Large

Owners are required to prevent their cats from running at large. Cats must be physically restrained when leaving the premises of their owner. Such restraints may include a carrier, cat backpack or harness with attached leash (attaching a leash to their collar is not recommended, as cats can easily slip out of them).

Cat play pens and catios are also a great way to give your feline companion a safe way to enjoy the outdoors without the fear of them escaping their yard.

Licensing

Domesticated cats, 6 months and older, that live within the city limits are required to be current on their rabies vaccines and to be licensed with Animal Services. Visit Pet Licenses for more information.

Cat Limit

The maximum number of cats allowed in the City of Aurora is five per household.

Shelter-Neuter-Return (SNR) Program

Animal Services has a SNR program available for community cats. Community cats are referred to as feral unsocial cats that have had little to no interaction with people and are considered wild. The SNR program's goal is to stabilize and reduce the population of community cats. However, a community cat caretaker, or a SNR organization, must be registered and have a permit with Animal Services to partake in the program. For more information regarding the SNR program or to register, please contact the Aurora Animal Shelter at 303.326.8280 or view our ordinance under Sec. 14-102.

More information can be obtained through our city ordinances in Chapter 14.

Any questions regarding the city's stance on animals rules and regulations can be directed to Animal Services.
