A Letter from Our Director

A Letter from Our Director: Building on Blessings in 2021
Posted on 01/14/2021
In so many ways, 2020 has been a most challenging year for Aurora Public Library. As the pandemic unfolded, we dealt with an everchanging set of operating procedures to keep everyone safe and served. While I am irrevocably changed by the loss and isolation of 2020, I choose to focus on the bright spots that were also part of this past year at the library.

I watched the APL team transform its service delivery in a matter of days and weeks. The first transformation was the creation of virtual programming. The library closed on Saturday, March 14 and online story time launched the following week. APL led the way on virtual programming and continues to have a record number of viewers from Aurora and all over the country.

While Aurora Libraries were closed to the public, our sewing labs were repurposed for “Operation Aurora Mask.” More than 3,000 masks were made for Aurora’s first responders during a time when face masks were a rare commodity.

In May, APL launched curbside pickup. It required solving a variety of logistical issues across multiple locations. The popular service has been a lifeline for so many who are able to access library materials without any human contact.

All APL locations were reopened by early August. The staff has continued to serve Aurora during the pandemic. They are my heroes and their courage is inspiring. We have received so many positive customer comments about being open, and this too is inspirational. Thank you for allowing us to serve you and thank you for continuing to come through our doors. Let’s continue to build on our blessings this upcoming year!
