CoyoteThe front range of Colorado is home to many animals including coyotes. It is not uncommon to see coyotes in Aurora, after all this is considered coyote county. Sightings are much more frequent if you live near a park, trail, golf course or natural open space. Coyotes are highly adaptable to urban landscapes and have no problem navigating through neighborhoods.

Even though they are majestic creatures, it is important to remember that they are wild animals and generally live off small prey. Small pets should never be left outside unsupervised even if the yard is fenced especially after dusk. Pets should always be kept on a leash when out for a walk.

To discourage coyotes from entering your property be sure to never leave food outside and store trash in a covered container. Never feed a coyote as it can quickly become a public nuisance or a threat to the community.

If a coyote is trying to enter your property or if you encounter one on a walk do not run. Coyotes are prey driven animals with the instincts to chase. Instead face the coyote while being as big and loud as possible to intimidate them. Swing your arms, stomp your feet and demand that they leave. Collect small pets in your arms and keep larger pets by your side. Tossing objects near the coyote may help chase it off.

Encountering a coyote can be frightening, but with these tips in mind you should be able to keep your pets safe.
