Feral CatNot every cat that comes to the Aurora Animal Shelter is domesticated. Often people will trap stray cats on their property and bring them to the shelter. Most of these cats have had little if no interaction with people and are considered feral. They are wild cats that cannot be safely adopted into a home, however, there is another option for them.

The Aurora Animal Shelter has a barn cat program. This program gives these cats a second chance by becoming working cats. Working cats are placed into barns, workshops, warehouses or other outside structures to help discourage rodents. They also can provide companionship for horses and other farm animals.

All barn cats are spayed/neutered and given a clean bill of health before being placed in the program. It is highly recommended having at least two barn cats to keep each other company.

Since the City of Aurora does not allow free roaming cats, participants in the Barn Cat Program must live outside of the Aurora city limits. If you live outside of Aurora and can provide shelter, a regular supply of food and water, a barn cat may be ideal for you.

If you are interested in adopting a barn cat, or have any questions, please call us at 303.326.8280. Additional information on how to acclimate your barn cat to your property will be provided.
