Aurora Animal Shelter Community Outreach CoordinatorNumerous families in Aurora are facing financial hardship, even more so due to covid-19. Keeping a pet as part of the family can be a difficult decision when money is scarce. However, the Aurora Animal Shelter wants the public to know that it is here to help.

For several years the Aurora Animal Shelter has collected donations for its pet food bank and redistributed pet food to Aurora residents that are in need. The shelter has always been a huge advocate of helping pet families stay together. One of the main reasons why people surrender their pets is due to financial hardships. The shelter quickly realized that pets had a greater chance of remaining in their homes, if the shelter could help provide pet food until pet owners could get back on their feet. Unfortunately, not many Aurora residents are aware that the shelter provides this service.

Aurora Mobile Pantry EventRecently the Aurora Animal Shelter participated in both of the May Aurora Mobile Food Pantry events. The events were organized and hosted by the Community Relations Division and Aurora Interfaith Community Services. The shelter was able to provide over a thousand pounds of dog and cat food to those that were in need. With the help of Colorado Pet Pantry, the shelter is anticipating on attending future Mobile Food Pantry events.

The first mobile pantry event was covered by Colorado's local news Denver7 and can be viewed here: Denver7 news article about Aurora's Mobile Food Pantry.

Car Line at the Aurora Mobile Food PantryThe great news is that you do not have to wait for a mobile pantry if you need pet food. Anyone that is seeking pet food is encouraged to contact the shelter for availability and to schedule an appointment for pick up.

If you would like to help the shelter's food bank, the shelter is always in need of dry dog and cat food. The shelter prefers 20 lbs. bags or less as it makes it easier to redistribute during the mobile pantries. Canned food is also greatly appreciated. Pet food donations can be dropped off at 15750 E. 32nd Ave., Aurora CO 80011. Donations can be left at the front door. For large scale donations, please call to set up an appointment to drop off or if you need a donation receipt, please call us at 303.326.8280. As always the shelter is extremely grateful for the generosity and support of our community!
