Raising a Flock in the City of Aurora

Did you know that the City of Aurora allows their citizens to have chickens on their residential properties? Having chickens can provide you with a fresh source of eggs. However, there are some things that you need to take into consideration before keeping hens in your backyard.
To own chickens on a residential property in Aurora there are some general guidelines to keep in mind:
• A city permit is required to own chickens. The permit application can be downloaded here: Chicken Application Permit.
• Owners can have no more than 6 hens at any given time, unless the residential property exceeds 20,000 square feet, in which case 8 hens are allowed.
• Roosters are not permitted in the city.
• Hens must have proper housing, with adequate protection from the weather and predators while remaining in a sanitary condition.
• Hens must be secured in their structure from dusk until dawn.
• Homeowners Associations (HOAs) have the authority to prohibit chickens within their own bylaws.
• Renters must obtain a written consent from a landlord.
