Leash Law

Dog on a LeashWith a statewide quarantine in effect, it seems that more people are taking this as an opportunity to get some fresh air and exercise with their best friend at their side. While you are enjoying the outdoors in Aurora, please remember to keep your dog on a leash. Having your dog on a leash protects both your dog and the community. Below are some reasons why you should keep your dog leashed:

• It’s the law. The City of Aurora has a leash law. According to the ordinance any dog leaving its property must be on a leash no longer than ten feet and held by a person that is physically able to handle the dog.
• Prevents dog fights and potentially expensive vet bills. Not all dogs are dog friendly.
• Loose dogs can run into the road and cause injury to themselves and others.
• Liability goes up if a dog is off leash and an incident occurs. The off-leash dog owner may be responsible for any injury caused to another person or animal.
• Not everyone likes dogs, some people may have allergies and others may be afraid of them.
• Less of a chance of your dog eating something that could be potentially dangerous.
• Dogs can harm or kill wildlife.

Many of these occurrences can simply be avoided by keeping your dog safe on a leash.
