Pet Surrender

Shy ChihuahuaChoosing to surrender a pet is never an easy decision. If you are surrendering your pet due to veterinary cost, behavioral issues or financial concerns, the Aurora Animal Shelter may be able to assist you, offer advice or refer you to other resources. We would prefer to help you keep your pet in your home and part of your family. However, if you must surrender, we are committed to providing your pet with the best care possible.





To surrender your pet the Aurora Animal Shelter requires the following:
  • Pets must be brought to the Aurora Animal Shelter at 15750 E. 32nd Ave., Aurora, CO 80011.
  • The legal owner of the animal must be present.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • A valid photo ID is required.
  • Complete a surrender form to provide the shelter with information about your pet.
  • Pay the surrender fee listed below.
  • If possible, provide your pet's medical records.

Surrender Fees

Aurora Residents: $44

 
*Non-Aurora Residents:  $55

*We may not be able to accept non-Aurora resident surrenders during our peak season, when our kennel space is near max capacity. Peak season is typically May - Sept. We recommend surrendering at the shelter that is designated in your jurisdiction or calling us to check on space availability before coming to the Aurora Animal Shelter. 

Resources and Available Help

The most common reasons why pets get surrendered to the shelter are due to cost of care, behavior issues, new living situations and moving. The resources below may provide you with assistance for overcoming those obstacles.

Pet Food Bank - The Aurora Animal Shelter has a pet food bank. Thanks to the generosity of our community we can provide pet food for those going through a financial hardship. If you need pet food or other pet supplies, please call us at 303.326.8280 to check for availability and to schedule an appointment for pick up.

In addition, the ASPCA provides plenty of online guides and information for basic training and behavior modification for dogs and cats. You can visit ASPCA Pet-care for more information.

Training - The City of Aurora offers training classes through their Parks & Recreation Division. A list of their services can be found at City of Aurora Dog Training.

Low-Cost Vet Clinics - There are several low-cost veterinary clinics in the area, as well as national, state and local organizations focused on assisting with the cost of veterinary care.
