We are currently hiring for an upcoming 2023 Lateral Police Academy.

The Aurora Police Department is offering a hiring bonus of up-to $15,000 which includes a $6,000 hiring bonus, a $4,000 retention bonus and up-to $5,000 in moving expenses if you relocate to the city of Aurora. 

Please note: You will not have the option to change/revise your application once it is submitted. It is imperative you proofread the application before submitting it. If you are disqualified for incorrectly answering a question on the application, there is no appeal process. You will be required to wait until the next hiring period.


Lateral Requirements:

  1. Be twenty-one (21) years old.
  2. Have a high school diploma or GED.
  3. Have three years previous related experience in good standing within the four-year period immediately preceding the application. Related experience shall consist of full-time paid employment as a Police Officer in a Full-Service Police Department.
    • Please note: you may NOT apply early, you must have three years of experience at the time of application.

The Police Department uses the following criteria when selecting lateral applicants to participate in the lateral testing process:

Service within any Full-Service police/law enforcement department/agency in the state of Colorado.

  • Full-Service Law Enforcement Department/Sheriff’s Office - is defined as an agency that responds to calls for service, makes arrests, and files criminal cases without the services of another law enforcement agency

Patrol – is under general supervision, performs law enforcement and crime prevention work for the protection of life and property; patrols an assigned area in a police car, on motorcycle, or on foot, enforcing federal, state, and municipal laws and ordinances.

Military Experience: Within the last 4 years 1 year military police combined with 2 years civilian law enforcement. Military experience will be reviewed by the Background Unit.

  • Patrol Function refers to more than just base security. The applicant must have provided the equivalent duties of a civil police officer working in a patrol duty capacity, i.e., responding to calls for service, issuing citations, investigation crimes, making arrests, etc.

Must have at least three years as a commissioned law enforcement officer (POST certified in Colorado or out of state equivalent) AND validated evidence of successful completion of a related training academy certified by the appropriate state, federal or local regulatory or oversight agency.

Additionally, part-time Military, Detention, Reserve Police Officers and security personnel will NOT be considered as previous related experience.

Common Questions APD receives from Lateral applicants:

  • Am I required to attend the Academy?
    • Yes, you are required to go through our Academy.
    • The Academy is 8 weeks long, with the possibility of extension. Recruits who fail to meet the 8-week benchmarks will be extended at the discretion of Academy Instructors.
    • Recruits are expected to pass exams administered in the Academy, if the Recruit is unable to maintain a passing score, their employment may be terminated.
    • Field Training is 7 weeks long: 2 x 3-week cycles with one week of test out.
  • Am I required to live at the Academy?
    • You are not required to live at the Academy.
    • You are not required to live within the City to work for APD.
  • How physically fit do I need to be?
    • PHYSICAL FITNESS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Our Academy sets the bar very high for PT and you will be held to the same standard as an entry-level applicant. If you are not currently in good, physical shape-begin your workout regimen. NOW.
