Recycling Station Closing Aug. 31

Local recycling reduces the amount of waste going into landfills and reuses materials that have market value.

The city of Aurora was initially able to provide recycling drop-off to residents with support from federal stimulus funds and partnerships with local waste haulers, but in the past five years, recycling drop-off sites have been maintained without dedicated budget resources.

Conflicts with other city-related operations forced the closure of the single-stream recycling drop-off site at Saddle Rock Golf Course in 2018.

While the city remains committed to sustainability, the remaining single-stream drop-off site, the Central Facilities Recycling Center at 13646 E. Ellsworth Ave., is unsustainable. Resource limitations due to COVID-19, along with continuous overuse and abuse of the site, have prompted a decision to close the facility Aug. 31.

Waste Management offers an additional single-stream recycling drop-off site at the Denver Arapahoe Disposal Site, 3500 S. Gun Club Road, to address Aurora residents' recycling needs. Acceptable materials include empty and clean glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, jugs and tubs, and aluminum and steel food and beverage cans; clean paper; and flattened cardboard. Materials should not be bagged in plastic. More information about using the recycling services at the DADS facility is available at WMSolutions.com.

The city encourages residents to sign up for curbside recycling from their local trash hauler if feasible. To cut down the need for waste disposal and recycling and create less waste in the first place, the city also urges residents to reduce and reuse as much as possible, including limiting the use of single-service items.

The city will continue to host periodic item-specific recycling events throughout the year like e-cycling and mattresses. An e-cycling event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 29 at Tallyn’s Reach Library, 23911 E. Arapahoe Road.
