Lobbyists in Aurora Must Now Register
Posted on 08/02/2021

A new city of Aurora ordinance that took effect Aug. 1 requires any person or organization lobbying in Aurora to register with the Aurora City Clerk's Office prior to conducting any lobbying activities.

Registration for both individuals and organizations is now available at AuroraGov.org/Lobby. Registration must be renewed annually by Jan. 15 for the following 12-month period.

Lobbyists also must submit a quarterly financial report with the Aurora City Clerk each annual quarter and each subsequent quarter in which the lobbyist receives any income or makes any expenditures for lobbying in Aurora.

The first quarterly financial report is due Oct. 15, 2021, along with the annual registration statement if it hasn't been filed already.

Lobbying in the city of Aurora requires any person or organization to comply with all requirements in the Aurora Revised Municipal Code Chapter II, Article IX. All lobbyists and any individual communicating directly with or soliciting others to communicate with a covered official for the purposes of influence or to persuade the covered official shall file registration statements and quarterly financial reports with the City Clerk. A complete list of covered officials is available in the Lobbyist Registration Guide at AuroraGov.org/Lobby.

The City Clerk will accept complaints regarding compliance starting Jan. 16, 2022. The City Clerk's Office will focus on education and compliance in the regulation of lobbyists during the year the ordinance takes effect. Lobbyists will not be subject to revocation, suspension nor sanctions for any violations in 2021.
