Progress Updates

Our plan to restore trust is being informed by several external, independent reviews of the Aurora Police Department and city operations, commissioned by the Aurora City Council. These include:

• A comprehensive review of the Aurora Police Department in partnership with 21CP Solutions, a global firm of national experts in the areas of civil rights and public safety.

• An independent investigation of the Elijah McClain case conducted by a team of experts led by Jonathan Smith, Executive Director of the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs.

• A Community Police Task Force made up of residents and community partners to evaluate, discuss and develop recommendations to improve effective and transparent communication between the Aurora Police Department and the community.

• The State Attorney General "Patterns and Practices" investigation and report, which resulted in a Consent Decree agreement with the city.

• The Community Advisory Council (CAC) is a group of prominent community leaders who are overseeing public safety changes at the city. The CAC has worked to come up with several community-engagement opportunities, including hosting a virtual community meeting in February 2023.

The city of Aurora will not waver from its commitment to have city departments and agencies that embody the rich, culturally diverse community we serve. While we are awaiting the results of several key reports to help inform our long-term strategy, we are not waiting on change. 

Our desire for expedience can't replace our most important objective: getting it right. We will continue to seek best practices and learn from others by collaborating with city, state and community leaders and our officers. 

Our goal is to have long-lasting success and a positive impact on our community. We will continue to have tough conversations. Below is an update on steps that have already been taken, or are currently in progress, under the five main points of the plan:
