AuroraTV has been awarded top news series among all local governments across the U.S. and has been named best overall station in its budget size in the 2021 NATOA Government Programming Awards.

“Navigating this past year with the COVID pandemic has been an opportunity for us to reimagine and innovate on how we communicate with residents. AuroraTV has approached this challenge eagerly and transitioned our great storytelling and information-gathering to provide Aurorans with valuable, important and community-building programming,” said Randy Simpson, Aurora’s Television and Cable Services Manager. “It’s great to see the team’s work recognized this way by NATOA. We are a proud part of this city and look forward to continuing to serve our community with excellence.”

NATOA, the national local government telecommunications organization, announced its annual awards Thursday, and AuroraTV took home seven honors. Awards of Excellence are considered first-place honors; Awards of Distinction are the next-highest honor.

  • Overall Excellence ($500,000 to $1 million budget) – Award of Excellence
  • News Series – Award of Excellence – “Aurora Now”
  • Public Health (non-COVID) – Award of Excellence – “Victory for Victoria” (also a Heartland Regional Emmy Award winner)
  • Video Journalism – Award of Distinction
  • Performing Arts Program (Long Form) – Award of Distinction – “Aurora Holiday Sparkle”
  • Edited Community Event Coverage (budget over $350,000) – Award of Distinction – “Honoring a Hero”
  • PSA (non-COVID) – Award of Honor – “#StopAsianHate”

This is the 10th time AuroraTV has won the Overall Excellence top honors (the first award coming in 1987), and the seventh time winning the top news series award.
