My name is Robert Schroeder. I was born, raised and reside in Colorado. I grew up on a small ranch on the eastern plains of Colorado where I built barns and other structures and thus made the natural transition into construction which has influenced the way I look at and build my ceramic pieces. I began my love of ceramics in high school and really started to see the fun side of working in three-dimensional media. After a short break, I found myself taking ceramics classes at a local college, where I became a studio assistant and helped others sharpen their skills.
Over the past several years I have worked to understand the process of building a ceramic piece from start to finish. In this pursuit, I have come to understand the formulation of clay bodies for different firings and different building techniques. On the other end of the process I have become a kiln builder, learning to build a wide variety of kilns for firing ceramics.
Through all this I have continued my love of building my own pieces. My work tends to be very random in the form that I create. I do find myself making a series from time to time. I like to make whatever will appeal to myself, and make me anxious to open the kiln to see how it came out.
