Life Safety Inspections

Fire Code Inspection Bureau

The city of Aurora's adoption of the 2009 International Fire Code authorizes and requires the Fire Department to inspect all commercial properties. A fire inspection program has been developed to meet this requirement.

The goal of the Life Safety Division is for all businesses, operations, occupancies and events in the city of Aurora to be safe, successful and in accordance with the International Fire Code.Fire inspections play a key part in meeting this goal. Fire inspections are scheduled biennially for most businesses. Occasionally inspections are prompted by citizen requests or other means.

Initial inspections are conducted by on line firefighters. The scope of these inspections is identifying obvious fire hazards (i.e. electrical cords, combustible storage, blocked exits and hazardous conditions). Violations are written by the firefighters and require a re-inspection to ensure compliance with the code requirements by an Aurora Fire Life Safety Division fire prevention specialist (inspector).

All inspectors have an inspection assignment of commercial occupancies in a specific area of the city.

Non-compliance of requirements is subject to citation and monetary fees may apply. Fire inspectors maintain an International Fire Code Certification and take continuing-education code related classes to maintain their certification and skill level.

If you have questions regarding a fire inspection or a possible fire code violation please contact us at Life Safety Division, Aurora Fire Department, 303-326-8999
