Metro Area Law Enforcement Host “Violation of the Month” Program in Colorado

WHAT:     Violation of the Month is a new cooperative traffic safety program supported by more than 22 metro area law enforcement agencies to reduce motor vehicle reduce fatalities and serious injuries that have reached an all-time high in Colorado.

The goal of the Violation of the Month program is to positively influence driver behavior, reduce traffic crashes, and ultimately prevent serious injuries and death that result from dangerous driving by engaging and educating the public, and securing voluntary compliance with traffic laws.
Participating agencies will review their local crash data to determine the leading causes of fatal and serious injury crashes in the metro area, and the data-driven offenses will determine what the Violation of the Month will be—speed, non-belt use, distraction, impaired driving, failure to move over for emergency vehicles, etc. Agency administrators will direct their patrol and/or traffic enforcement resources to enforce traffic laws related to the Violation of the Month theme.
The upcoming Violation of the Month will be announced through monthly press releases, events and social media outlets, along with results from the previous Month’s enforcement efforts.
The Violation of the Month program is a partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Region 8 and CDOT’s Office of Transportation Safety.

WHY:     Tragedies are occurring on our roadways throughout the state of Colorado nearly every single day. We have all been personally affected or know someone who has been affected by a horrific traffic crash. In 2017, there were 630 fatal traffic collisions on Colorado roadways.
