(October 7) The Aurora Police Department's Traffic Section is investigating a fatal crash between a city of Aurora vehicle and a pedestrian that occurred at East 6th Avenue and Helena Street.

On October 7, 2022 at about 9:00 a.m., Aurora Police Officers and medical personnel were dispatched to the intersection of East 6th Avenue and North Helena Street on reports of a crash involving a pedestrian. A 66-year-old woman was found to have been struck by a 2015 Ford F-350 belonging to the city of Aurora’s water department. The woman was suffering from life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital. She was pronounced deceased a short time later.

The initial investigation has revealed that the woman was crossing East 6th Avenue, going from the north side of the roadway to the south, using the west crosswalk at the Helena Street intersection. The Ford F-350 was traveling northbound on Helena Street and was making a left turn onto East 6th Avenue and struck the woman. The driver of the F-350 remained on scene and showed no signs of impairment. Traffic Investigators were called to the scene to collect evidence, photographs and take measurements. At this time, the driver of the city of Aurora vehicle, a 28-year-old man, has not been cited for this crash. This investigation is ongoing, and while it does not appear that speed or alcohol were contributing factors, the employee voluntarily submitted to a blood draw analysis. Per standard city policy and federal requirements involving tragic accidents like these, city employees are immediately tested for drugs and alcohol at the city’s provider. The testing meets requirements set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The results are pending.

The identification of the deceased will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office once they have been positively identified and their next-of-kin have been notified.

Please contact the Aurora Police Traffic Section if you witnessed this crash or have dash-camera footage of the crash and have not yet spoken to investigators. Tipsters can anonymously report any information to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers by calling 720.913. STOP (7867) or by going to MetroDenverCrimeStoppers.com.

This is the 36th traffic related fatality in the city in 2022.

“We’re extremely saddened by today’s incident,” stated Marshall Brown, General Manager for Aurora Water. “We’re fully cooperating with the investigation and extend our deepest condolences to the victim's family.”

(September 25) The Aurora Police Traffic Section is investigating a fatal auto-pedestrian crash that occurred overnight on East Colfax Avenue near Peoria Street.

On September 25, 2022 at about 2:25 am, officers responded to East Colfax Avenue near the intersection of Peoria Street for reports of a man struck by a vehicle. Officers discovered a man lying in the roadway suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the hospital but sadly he did not survive.

Investigators learned the man was walking across East Colfax Avenue, just west of Peoria Street, when a 2009 Honda Pilot, traveling eastbound on East Colfax Avenue, hit the pedestrian. The driver of the Pilot did not immediately stop, nor render aid, and left the scene. The Honda Pilot was located by officers a short time later after they observed it driving nearby. The driver of that Honda Pilot, Geyler Najera (12/18/1992) was subsequently arrested. He was booking into the Aurora Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident. His booking photo is provided below. This case will be prosecuted by the 18th Judicial District Attorney's Office and any additional information will come from them.

The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased victim once he is positively identified and next of kin has been notified.

The intersection was closed for a few hours so Traffic Investigators could collect evidence, photographs, and measurements. This investigation is ongoing, but alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.

Please contact the Aurora Police Traffic Section if you witnessed this crash or have dash-camera footage of the crash and have not yet spoken to investigators.
