The Aurora Police Department Traffic Section will be conducting a Stationary Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint commencing Friday, July 8th, 2016 from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. This is part of our continuing commitment to the statewide effort to combat drunk drivers and reduce alcohol related traffic accidents and fatalities. This checkpoint is part of the DUI Checkpoint Colorado program, which kicks off Memorial Day weekend continuing through Labor Day weekend, and will include more than 100 checkpoints statewide by 11 participating agencies. This checkpoint will be located on Peoria St.

Motorists passing through the checkpoint will be contacted briefly by an officer who will be looking for signs of intoxication and/or impairment in the driver. The checkpoint should cause only minor inconvenience to traffic along the targeted roadway, and highly visible signage will be posted leading into the checkpoint screening area. Drivers entering a checkpoint are asked to pay close attention to the officers directing traffic through the area. Motorists should also roll down their drivers’ side window as they approach the screening area. This allows for better communication between the motorist and the officer, quicker screening and a shorter delay overall.

The checkpoint is funded by an N.H.T.S.A. (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) grant in partnership with the “Heat is On” campaign and administered by the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The APD Traffic Section will also have a dozen or so officers out of the streets conducting DUI Saturation Patrols, specifically looking for impaired drivers.

Please contact Traffic Section Commander, Lt. Michael McClelland with any questions.

Aurora, CO.- 19 June, 2016, 9:41p.m.- Taco Mex Resturant parking lot (10909 E. Colfax Ave.)
APD patrol and traffic officers responded to E. Colfax Ave.  and Joliet Street on a report of an automobile versus pedestrian crash.  Upon arrival investigation revealed the following:  A witness who was sitting in the drive-thru lane of the Taco Mex restaurant, 10909 E. Colfax Ave., advised observing a 50 yo Hispanic male walking westbound along E. Colfax Ave. north side sidewalk at Joliet Street who appeared to be very intoxicated.  The male reached the northeast corner of E. Colfax Ave. and Joliet and fell down on the grass.  The landscaping sprinklers were on so the male got up and stumbled into the Taco Mex parking lot and collapsed again in the southwest corner of the parking lot onto his back.  The subject laid there for a minute or so until a maroon in color 2009 Cadillac Escalade, driven by a 29 yo female, was northbound on Joliet Street and made a right turn into the Taco Mex parking lot, driving over the male.

The male pedestrian, who we have not been able to positively identify, was transported to University ER for life threatening injuries and was pronounced dead a short time later.  The female driver of the Escalade was very cooperative with our investigation and showed no indications of alcohol or drug impairment but consented to a blood draw.

The APD Traffic Section is investigating this crash under report # 2016-24476.  We are not releasing names at this time pending identity of the male pedestrian and notifications of next of kin.  No charges have been issued at this time as it appears the proximate cause of the crash was the actions of the pedestrian.

Aurora, CO. - 19 June, 2016, 12:57 a.m.-  APD patrol and traffic officers responded to the area of E. Colfax Ave. and Scranton Street on a report of an automobile versus pedestrian crash. Upon arrival investigation revealed a 57 yo male was walking towards the Diamond Shamrock, 12727 E. Colfax Ave., crossing E. Colfax Ave. southbound over the landscaped median portion of the roadway. A black in color Cadillac Escalade, driven by a 35 yo male, was eastbound on E. Colfax Ave. in the center lane of traffic, going the posted speed limit of 35 mph. He did not see the pedestrian in time and struck him.

The pedestrian was taken to University Hospital with life threatening injuries and pronounced dead a short time later. The driver stayed on scene, was cooperative with our investigation, and consent to blood draw. We have no indications the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  We do believe the pedestrian was possibly homeless and intoxicated at the time of the crash.

The APD Traffic Section is investigating this crash under report # 2016-24379.  We are not releasing names at this time pending notification of next of kin by the Arapahoe County Coroner's office.  At this time our investigation shows the proximate cause of the crash was the actions of the pedestrian crossing the street in a heavily landscaped and not well lit median area, instead of using a marked or signalized crosswalk.  No charges against the driver have been issued at this time.
