Fatal Auto vs Bicycle Crash
Aurora CO
October 12th, 2017

At 6:11AM, Aurora Communications received calls from citizens that a car vs. bicycle crash had occurred on Smith Rd. east of N. Tower Rd.  Responding police and medical personnel located the crash in the 19100 block of E. Smith Rd.  This location is an industrial area, and there is no lighting on the roadway.  It was dark at that time.  Smith Rd. is a 2 lane roadway.

Initial investigation indicates that an adult male, wearing dark clothing, was riding a bicycle west along E. Smith Rd., approximately 3 feet from the shoulder, or into the westbound lane of travel.  A 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, occupied by an adult male, was traveling westbound, and struck the bicyclist.

Medical personnel transported the bicyclist to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Speed or alcohol / drug impairment do not seem to be a factor at this time.

The Aurora Police Traffic Investigations Unit is actively investigating this crash.

Bicyclists are reminded to always wear reflective gear, and when travelling during darkness to utilize a bicycle lighting system if possible.

The Adams County Coroners office will be releasing the name of the bicyclist, once notification of next of kin is done.

No further information will be released at this time.
