NATURE: Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint

Aurora, Colorado
The Aurora Police Department will be conducting a Stationary Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint on Friday August 30th, 2019 from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. This is part of our continuing commitment to the statewide effort to combat drunk drivers and reduce alcohol related traffic accidents and fatalities. This checkpoint is part of the DUI Checkpoint Colorado program, which kicks off Memorial Day weekend, continuing through Labor Day weekend. This checkpoint will be located on E. Mississippi Ave.

Motorists passing through the checkpoint will be contacted briefly by an officer who will be looking for signs of intoxication and/or impairment in the driver. The checkpoint should cause only minor inconvenience to traffic along the targeted roadway, and highly visible signage will be posted leading into the checkpoint screening area. Drivers entering a checkpoint are asked to pay close attention to the officers directing traffic through the area. Motorists should also roll down their drivers’ side window as they approach the screening area. This allows for better communication between the motorist and the officer, quicker screening, and a shorter delay overall.

The checkpoint is funded by an N.H.T.S.A. (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) grant in partnership with the “Heat is On” campaign and administered by the Colorado Department of Transportation.

On Sunday August 4th, 2019 at approximately 7:08 am, Aurora Police Officers were dispatched to a local freestanding Emergency Room on the report of a juvenile with serious injuries under suspicious circumstances. The initial investigation determined that the juvenile was either riding on or hanging out of a vehicle driven by an older juvenile. The vehicle came to an abrupt stop and the younger juvenile came off the vehicle. The incident occurred on Marguerite Parkway in the Mission Viejo neighborhood.

The juvenile victim was later transferred to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation. Unfortunately, the victim died as a result of his injuries the following day, August 5th. The identities of the juveniles involved are not being released at this time.

The incident is still being investigated by the Aurora Police Department Traffic Section. This marks the 15th traffic related fatality for Aurora in 2019.

We continue to look for the other individuals previously released.

On July 12th, 2019, there was a protest at the ICE/GEO Facility regarding the Lights For Liberty.

During this protest, a group of individuals removed three flags being flown in front of the facility, including the U.S. Flag. The three flags were replaced with the Mexican national flag, a desecrated upside down with some red spray paint written on it thin blue line flag, and a flag that read “F##k the Cops”. This same group attempted to burn the U.S. flag that had been removed from the flag pole.

We have obtained photographs of these individuals and are asking for the public's assistance in identifying these persons of interest.

Anyone with information is asked to either email [email protected] or you can remain anonymous and call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867). By calling Crime Stoppers, you may be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000. The Aurora Reward Fund is also matching this $2,000 reward, for a total reward of up to $4,000 with information about these individuals.
