On August 31, 2018, a tragic shooting took place in the 1900 block of North Peoria Street that left two dead, one juvenile victim shot and one Aurora Police Officer shot. The Aurora Police Department is identifying Demarcus Brown-Jones (DOB 03/14/1990) as the suspect involved in that incident. Brown-Jones, who is pictured below, remains in stable condition and in police custody at an area hospital.

The officer who was shot in the vest last night has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
Two male victims and one juvenile victim were transported to local hospitals. Both male victims sadly succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased at the hospital. The juvenile victim and the suspect are both receiving treatment at local area hospitals.
The names of the decedents will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office once they have been positively identified and next of kin have been notified.
The Aurora Police Department Victims Services Unit is providing services to those affected by this tragic event.

On August 31, 2018, at approximately 5:17 p.m., officers with the Aurora Police Department responded to a reported physical dispute in the 1900 block of Peoria Street.
While conducting an investigation, shots were heard coming from the 1900 block of the Peoria Street/Paris Street alley. Officers responded to the area where shots were coming from and located multiple people lying on the ground. One of the individuals was a juvenile and all were suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
An officer then confronted an armed suspect and gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer and suspect being shot.
The officer, suspect, and others were all transported to local hospitals for treatment. The officer is in good condition and was wearing a bullet resistant vest which saved the officer from sustaining a life threatening injury.
The investigation into this incident is being handled by the Aurora Police Department's Major Crimes Unit in conjunction with the Denver Police Department. This is due to the passage of Senate Bill 15-219 which requires law enforcement agencies to team up with neighboring agencies to investigate officer-involved shootings. We are also working with the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office as we conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation.
The involved officer has been placed on administrative assignment with pay per Aurora Police Department policy.

On September 5, 2018, at approximately 5:15 p.m., officers with the Aurora Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team were in the 2200 block of North Fairplay Street in an attempt to make contact with a wanted suspect.
The SWAT team was assisting District Detectives in locating an adult male suspect who was wanted for domestic violence related criminal charges.
SWAT officers arrived in the area and contact was made with the wanted male suspect, who was armed. One officer discharged their firearm, striking the suspect. First aid was immediately rendered to the suspect by a SWAT Medic, and he was transported to a local hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
No officers were injured during this incident. The involved officer will be placed on administrative assignment with pay, per Aurora Police Department policy.
This incident is being investigated by the Aurora Police Department Major Crimes Unit in conjunction with the Denver Police Major Crimes Unit. We are also working with the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office as we conduct a thorough investigation. The investigation into this incident is in its early stages and much work needs to be done to determine what circumstances led up to this officer-involved shooting. Officers involved in this incident were equipped with body worn cameras that were activated.

Last Friday, June 29, 2018, the Aurora Police Department released details reference an officer involved shooting that occurred in the parking lot of a gas station located 14401 East 6th Avenue at approximately 3 P.M.
The investigation has revealed new details that the Aurora Police Department wishes to provide to the public for the sake of continued transparency. Detectives still have evidence to review, thus this investigation is still considered to be open.
To date, this investigation has revealed the suspect was being sought for attempt murder in the first degree in regards to a shooting that occurred on June 28, 2018, in which an adult male was shot two times. On June 29, 2018, the male suspect was observed inside a Nissan sedan by Aurora Police Officers. A traffic stop on that car was initiated at approximately South Peoria Street and East Alameda Avenue. The car appeared to pull over near the Highline Ballfields located at 50 South Peoria Street.
The suspect then began to flee the traffic stop at a high rate of speed and was recklessly driving through the ball fields where youth softball teams were present and actively playing softball. At this point, the suspect was observed by an independent witness driving while also holding a handgun.
A pursuit was initiated northbound through the ball fields with lights and sirens activated. The pursuit lasted for several minutes and eventually ended in the parking lot of the gas station located at 14401 East 6th Avenue. A Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) was executed for the safety of the public to end the pursuit. Officers were able to block the suspects’ car in the parking lot. As the suspect was still seated inside the vehicle he produced a handgun and pointed it in the direction of officers. Three officers subsequently fired their weapons. Officers on scene immediately began rendering aid to the suspect to include CPR. Despite providing life saving measures to the suspect he later died at the scene. The suspect will be identified at a later time by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
All three officers who fired their weapons have been placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard protocol. Officers present on scene were equipped with and activated their body worn cameras. If further information becomes available for public release we will provide an update here.

Yesterday, June 28, 2018 at approximately 3 P.M., officers responded to a local hospital after learning that an adult male victim was suffering from two gunshot wounds at that hospital. Officers investigated that shooting and learned that it occurred in the area of E. 14th Ave. and N. Chambers Rd. As a result of that investigation, detectives were able to positively identify an adult male suspect and subsequently established probable cause to arrest that suspect for attempted murder in relation to that incident.
Then today on June 29, 2018 just after noon, investigators located that suspect who was wanted in connection with the aforementioned shooting. The male was traveling in a Nissan sedan when he was located. Officers attempted to stop this male, who was considered to be armed and dangerous, and the male eluded police in the vehicle. A pursuit was initiated near North Peoria Street and East 1st Avenue. The pursuit lasted for several minutes and eventually ended in the parking lot of a gas station located at 14401 East 6th Avenue. As the pursuit ended, shots were fired by officers. A weapon not belonging to officers was recovered at the scene.
After shots were fired, officers pulled the lone suspect from the vehicle and began administering live saving measures. Despite the life-saving efforts, the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. That subject will be identified at a later time by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
This incident is being investigated by the Aurora Police Department Major Crimes Unit in conjunction with the Denver Police Department Major Crimes Unit. The investigation into this incident is still in its early stages and much work needs to be done in order to determine what circumstances lead up to the officer-involved shooting. The number of officers who fired their weapons is not being released at this time. Detectives will also review available body camera footage at a part of the investigation.

Earlier this morning, the Aurora Police Department released brief details in regards to an officer-involved shooting that occurred at 8900 East Colfax Avenue.
The investigation has revealed new details that the Aurora Police Department wishes to provide to the public in the sake of continued transparency. Detectives still have various witnesses to speak with and evidence to sift through, therefore the investigation is still considered to be in its preliminary stages.
Today in a press conference, Chief Metz discussed that he had viewed body-camera footage of the officer-involved shooting and provided the following information in a public statement:
This morning officers responded to the 8900 block of East Colfax Avenue around 12:30 A.M. to investigate a report of shots fired where a person was allegedly menaced with a gun. Officers received a very specific suspect description and began to search the area for the suspect. Just moments later during this search, Officers located a subject on the very same block matching the distinctive description of the suspect.
As Officers attempted to contact the suspect, he fled on foot through the parking lot of the Biltmore Motel located at 8900 East Colfax Avenue. A foot chase ensued and during this foot chase, Officers observed that the male was armed with a gun. They gave verbal orders for the suspect to drop the gun multiple times prior to the officer firing his weapon.
The Subject ran around a blind corner, stopped and was waiting as officers came around the corner. Officers gave more orders for the suspect to drop the gun before shots were fired. Subsequently, a handgun was found in possession of the suspect at the scene.
Officers immediately rendered aid to the subject to include the application of tourniquets and immediately contacted AFD/EMS. The subject was transported to a local hospital where he remained in serious condition for some time until he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The suspect is an African American adult male who will be identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office in days to come.
Officers present at the scene were equipped with and properly utilized department issued body-worn cameras.
Chief Metz acknowledged that the loss of any human life is a tragedy. He also remarked that he was proud of the professionalism that his officers displayed during such an incident.

On June 27, 2018 just after midnight, Aurora Police Officers responded to the 8900 block of E. Colfax Ave. to investigate the report of gunshots heard in the area.
As Officers were in this area, they obtained a description of a suspect who was reportedly involved in the shots fired call. As Officers checked the area, they located a suspect matching the provided description. Officers attempted to contact this adult male and a foot chase ensued. During the foot chase, Officers chased the suspect into the parking lot of the Biltmore Motel located at 8900 E. In response to the incident that occurred last evening wherein an Aurora Police Officer was involved in a shooting with a suspect, Chief Nick Metz remarked to the suspect’s family, “Incidents like this are tragic on both sides of the spectrum. Our thoughts are with you [suspect’s family] and we will continue to offer support throughout the investigative process.”
Today during a news conference with media outlets, Chief of Police Nick Metz and Lieutenant Hershel Stowell with the Major Crimes/Homicide Unit addressed the public in providing additional information pertaining to last evening’s officer-involved shooting. A clearer picture of what occurred was relayed as follows:
At approximately 8:00 P.M. on April 9, 2018 a suspect was located inside a taxi cab near the Crossland Hotel located near East 38th Avenue and North Chambers Road. The said suspect, an adult male, was wanted by police in the City of Federal Heights for Attempt Murder involving a firearm. That incident occurred just a day prior on April 8, 2018. Having this information, members of the APD’s Strategic Response Team (SRT) and the Fugitive Apprehension and Surveillance Team (FAST) began actively attempting to locate the suspect, as he was believed to pose a serious threat to the community.
These officers had information that the suspect was in a taxi cab as a passenger. The suspect would not allow the driver of the taxi cab to exit the cab and ordered the driver at gunpoint to keep driving. The driver of the taxi cab came to a stop at a red light at East Smith Road and North Chambers Road. The driver fled the taxi leaving the wanted subject in the backseat, where he was now the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Officers from SRT, who were in unmarked vehicles, were adjacent to the taxi when it stopped for the red light. Upon seeing the taxi driver flee from the vehicle, they recognized an opportunity to take the subject into custody with minimal danger to the general public. As officers moved up to the vehicle to take the suspect into custody, shots were fired. Prior to shots being fired, warnings were given by officers. From the course of the investigation, it appears that the suspect fired at officers. The suspect was found to be armed with a handgun.
The suspect sustained injuries at the scene and immediately received medical treatment from an Aurora SWAT paramedic who was at the scene. The suspect was transported to an area hospital where he remains in serious condition as of the writing of this news release.
One officer, a 26-year law enforcement veteran, was placed on paid administrative leave after firing his weapon. This is the officer’s first officer-involved shooting.
Due to the nature of the multiple on-going criminal investigations, the suspect’s identity is not being released at this time and no further information is available for public release.

On Monday April 9th, 2018 at approximately 8:00 pm officers with the Aurora Police Department received information that a wanted adult male suspect known to be armed and dangerous was in a vehicle near the intersection of North Chambers Road and East Smith Road. The suspect was wanted for serious crimes committed in the jurisdictions of Federal Heights and Aurora. Members of the Strategic Response Team attempted to apprehend the suspect when shots were fired.
No officers were injured during this incident. The suspect was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The identity of the suspect is not being released at this time.
The officer/officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. On February 12, 2018, the Aurora Police Department held a press conference to update the public and media on the officer involved shooting that occurred on February 10, 2018. The investigation has revealed that the incident began on February 9th (the night before the shooting) at 9: 13 p.m. with a reported felony menacing at I225 and East Mississippi Avenue. In this incident, the subject pointed a handgun at the reporting party. The reporting party described an armed individual and a suspect vehicle. The officers that responded were unable to locate the armed subject or vehicle and a report was taken.
On February 10th, at 11:27 p.m. the same officers who had taken the report of the felony menacing from the day before were in the area of East Smoky Hill Road and South Chambers Road when they observed the suspect vehicle from the felony menacing. Officers initiated a traffic stop at which time the driver, who fit the description from the felony menacing, exited the vehicle and advanced towards the officers. The subject refused the verbal orders given by the officers. As officers continued to give orders the subject began returning to the vehicle ignoring the officers' commands. As an officer attempted to go hands on with the subject, the subject produced a handgun and the officer discharged their duty weapon striking the subject.
The identity of the subject will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office pending the his positive identification and the notification of next of kin.

On Thursday October 12, 2017 at 9:26 p.m. officers from the Gang Intervention Unit were investigating a possible stolen vehicle in the 1000 block of South Fairplay Way.
Officers approached the vehicle and upon contact with two juvenile males a shot was fired by one of the officers. Both males were removed from the vehicle and detained. No injuries were sustained by the males or the involved officers.

On July 5, 2017 at approximately 9:10 a.m., Aurora Police Officers responded to a mobile home park in the 1600 Block of N. Pagosa Way on the report of a disturbance involving a gun. Upon arrival, responding Officers heard what was believed to be a gunshot come from inside a mobile home. An adult male suspect barricaded himself inside of the residence and did not comply with numerous orders to exit the residence.
In the interest of public safety, a reverse 911 call was made to a six-block radius alerting homeowners to stay indoors. Additionally, an Urgent Alert was published on Nextdoor.com warning neighborhood residents of the situation. Officers requested additional resources and eventually Aurora Police's Strategic Response Team (SRT) responded to the scene. Members of the Denver Police Department, Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, and Greenwood Village Police Department responded to assist by providing additional resources at the scene.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., gunfire was exchanged by an Aurora Police Officer and the suspect. Neither the Officer nor suspect were injured by gunfire in this incident.
The suspect was eventually placed in custody after he surrendered. The suspect showed no obvious signs of trauma but was transported to an area hospital for a medical evaluation. The suspect is not being identified at this time due to the nature of the active and on-going investigation.
The investigation is being handled by the Aurora Police Major Crimes/Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Denver Police Department. This is due to the passage of Senate Bill 219 which requires law enforcement agencies to team up with neighboring agencies to investigate officer involved shootings. Information previously released on June 18th, 2017:
On June 18th at approximately 12p.m. officers from the Denver Police Department, District 5 responded to a report of a felony menacing involving a gun in the area of Elemendorf Place and Tulsa Way. A short time later Denver Officers located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle in area of East 45th Avenue and North Peoria Street. When the Denver Officers attempted to make a traffic stop the suspect fled and Denver Police initiated a pursuit which entered the city of Aurora. At one point during the pursuit the suspect pointed a gun at pursuing officers.
The pursuit ended at the entrance of the Robinwood Condominium complex at East Alameda Parkway and East Ohio Avenue after the suspect lost control of his vehicle and crashed. During that time shots were fired by officers from the Denver Police Department. The suspect was struck and transported to a local hospital. He is expected to survive his injuries. A gun was recovered from the suspect's vehicle.
The identity of the suspect, who is an adult male is not being released at this time.

Information previously released on April 1st, 2017
On Saturday April 01, 2017, officers from the Fugitive Apprehension and Surveillance Team, Strategic Response and Tactics unit, and Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force were conducting surveillance on a wanted adult male suspect known to be armed and dangerous. The suspect was wanted for aggravated motor vehicle theft out of Denver. Throughout the course of the surveillance the officers received information the suspect was in a vehicle near the 1500 Block of North Sable Boulevard.
Our officers were able to locate the vehicle and at approximately 3:00 p.m. they attempted to apprehend the suspect. During the course of the apprehension the suspect fled in the vehicle which ended up in a ditch a short distance away. During the incident an officer fired his weapon at the suspect. The officers rendered aid to the suspect who was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. New charges are pending. There was a juvenile female passenger in the vehicle who was unharmed.
The officers has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
