(June 22, 2020) On Monday, June 22, 2020, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Denver police officers were following an armed carjacking suspect in a vehicle which led them into the city of Aurora. The carjacking originated in the area of East 48th Avenue and North Chambers Road.
The suspect drove the carjacked vehicle into the area of East 35th Place and Abilene Street when the suspect exited and began walking eastbound on East 35th Place. The Aurora Police Department was requested to respond to the area, emergent, to assist the Denver Police Department. The suspect was still armed with a handgun, was wearing a full-faced mask, and was being given clear, loud, verbal commands to drop his weapon. The suspect refused to drop his weapon and instead decided to raise it towards the officers. There was one Aurora Police Officer and five Denver Police Officers who fired their weapons. The suspect was pronounced deceased on scene shortly afterwards.
There were no injuries to any Aurora Police Officers nor Denver police officers and no members of the public were injured as a result of this incident. Any further requests for information related to the involved Denver police officers should be directed to the Denver Police Department Public Affairs Office. Any inquires relating to the officer-involved shooting investigation will be directed to our agency. All involved uniformed officers were wearing their department issued body worn cameras.
In accordance with Senate Bill 15-219 members of the Aurora Police Department, Denver Police Department, and the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will investigate this officer-involved shooting. Once this investigation is completed, it will then be presented to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for a criminal culpability review.

On May 4th, 2020 at around 9:20p.m., the Aurora Police Department Public Safety Communications Center received reports of a shooting at 291 South Sable Boulevard.
Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim later succumb to his injuries and was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
This is still an active investigation and investigators from the Major Crimes/Homicide Unit are working to determine what led to the shooting and death of the victim. His identity will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office once he has been positively identified and his next of kin have been notified.

(February 19, 2020) On Wednesday February 19, 2020 at about 11:20 a.m., Aurora Police Department Officers in the area of East Mississippi Avenue and North Sable Boulevard saw a pickup truck and recognized that it was stolen in a burglary yesterday. The keys were taken from an unsecured locker at the Morehead Recreation Center.
Officers in an unmarked patrol vehicle observed a stolen vehicle in the area. As officers were investigating the stolen vehicle it was involved in a crash. Officers had not yet initiated a traffic stop, nor were they in pursuit.
The officers began to follow the vehicle without turning on their lights and sirens because they were in an unmarked car. The driver of the stolen pickup, a 2010 Toyota Tacoma, ran the red light at East 6th Avenue and North Sable Boulevard. The pickup truck struck an RTD bus, another pickup truck, and an Aurora City Parks and Recreation vehicle. The Aurora Officers did not turn on their lights and siren to make a traffic stop before the driver accelerated.
The stolen pickup truck rolled, striking a power box, and came to rest in the ditch just north of E. 6th Avenue and N. Dillon Way. There were seven juvenile passengers in the stolen pickup truck. Aurora Fire Rescue and Falk Ambulance responded to the scene. Multiple people had to be extricated from the stolen pickup truck. In total, there were nine people injured: seven minor injuries, one serious, and one critical.
The damage to the power box has caused power outages in the area.
The intersection was closed for a period of time while officers were investigating this incident.
Aurora Police Department Traffic Investigators are handling this investigation which is ongoing. It will be some time before appropriate charges are determined. The names of those involved are not being released at this time.

(January 26, 2020) UPDATE: On Saturday January 25th, 2020, at approximately 8:54 p.m., Denver police officers were pursuing an armed robbery suspect in a vehicle which led them into the City of Aurora.
The armed robbery suspect, an adult male, was transported to an area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries later in the evening on January 25th, 2020. The identity of the male will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office pending positive identification, and notification of his next-of-kin.
An adult female and juvenile male were also occupants of the suspect vehicles. The adult female has been arrested and charged with at least Aggravated Robbery. Her identify will not be released at this time to not impede early investigative efforts.
The juvenile male was the third and final occupant of the suspect vehicles. The juvenile male was arrested on unrelated active criminal warrants, and charges are pending against in him related to this investigation. No further information will be released on him due to him being a juvenile.

(January 25, 2020) On Saturday January 25th, 2020, at approximately 8:54 p.m., Denver police officers were pursuing an armed robbery suspect in a vehicle which led them into the City of Aurora.
The suspects vehicle crashed into at least two cars on Interstate 225 (I-225) and East Colfax Avenue. The suspect then carjacked a silver sedan and fled the scene continuing to travel east on East Colfax Avenue to Airport Boulevard. The suspect vehicle then drove north in the southbound lanes on Airport Boulevard.
In the 2400 block of East Airport Boulevard Denver Police Officers may have attempted a pursuit intervention technique, or P.I.T. maneuver, which successfully disabled the silver sedan. The suspect, and two other occupants, fled on foot and unsuccessfully attempted to carjack a nearby silver minivan.
Finally, the suspect carjacked a nearby maroon SUV, but Denver police officers were able to stop and pin that SUV. During this final encounter with the suspect a Denver police officer made the decision to discharge their weapon striking the suspect.
The suspect, an adult male, was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.
During a subsequent search of the carjacked maroon SUV, a handgun was found and collected for evidence.
This incident will cause traffic closures in the 2400 block of Airport Boulevard for several hours while officers continue to investigate this complex scene.
The involved Denver police officer(s) nor any members of the public were injured as a result of this incident. Any further requests for information related to the involved Denver police officers should be directed to the Denver Police Department Public Affairs Office.

(January 8, 2020) On Wednesday January 8, 2020, at approximately 8:24 a.m. Aurora Police Officers were dispatched to the area of East Tennessee Place and South Truckee Street on a report of suspicious parties in the area.
The 911 caller described the suspicious parties as two juvenile females and one juvenile male, all approximately 15 years of age, who were associated with a red Honda CRV. The caller also advised the parties were looking into homes, and believed they may be attempting to commit a burglary. Officers learned the Honda CRV was stolen out of Colorado Springs as they were arriving on scene.
Upon officers arrival they confronted a juvenile male in the stolen vehicle. The officer made the decision to discharge his weapon which did not strike the juvenile male. The juvenile male was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. A handgun was recovered from the vehicle.
All responding officers were equipped with body-worn cameras and will be reviewed as part of this investigation. The involved officer has worked for the Aurora Police Department for 15 years, and has not been involved in any prior officer-involved shootings at the Aurora Police Department. The officer will be placed on administrative leave per Aurora Police Department policy.
This incident is being investigated by members of the Aurora Police Department, Denver Police Department and the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in accordance with Senate Bill 15-219.
Once this investigation is complete it will be presented to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for criminal culpability review. On Wednesday, December 25th, 2019, at approximately 02:15 A.M., Aurora Police Officers responded to the 17000 block of East Kansas Place on a reported shooting.
Upon officer’s arrival they located an adult male inside a house with a gunshot wound. Shortly thereafter, the male was pronounced deceased on scene. Positive identification of the victim will be done by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
This investigation is still very active and ongoing and is being investigated by the Aurora Police Major Crimes/Homicide Unit. Officers are actively looking for the suspect involved in this incident.

On Wednesday, December 25th, 2019, at approximately 12:20 A.M., Aurora Police Officers responded to 15700 East Colfax Avenue on a reported stabbing.
Upon officer’s arrival they located an adult male and an adult female inside a mobile home, both with stab wounds. The female was transported to an area hospital where she was later pronounced deceased. The male was also transported to the hospital where he remains in critical condition. Positive identification of the female, as well as next-of-kin notifications, will be done by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
This investigation is still very active and ongoing and is being investigated as a homicide by the Aurora Police Major Crimes/Homicide Unit. Investigators are currently trying to determine what led up to the stabbing and the relationship between the male and the female, if any.

On November 22, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz held a joint press conference with Aurora Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Stephen McInerny. The press conference began with a 911 call, and followed by body worn camera footage of the incident involving Elijah McClain that occurred on the night of August 24, 2019.
After the video Aurora Police Chief Metz and Aurora Fire Deputy Chief McInerny addressed the police and paramedic actions during the event. They offered their heartfelt condolences for the loss of Mr. McClain, and acknowledged the impact on Mr. McClain's family, our community, and the involved officers that evening.

In the evening hours of Thursday, October 10, 2019, Aurora Police officers responded to a residence in the 1500 block of South Bahama Street to contact a suspect in reference to an aggravated physical assault that occurred there earlier in the day.
Upon officer’s arrival they saw Mr. Huff standing next to a truck. As the officers (in full police uniform) approached the house, Mr. Huff immediately fled into the home. As mentioned in the affidavit, Mr. Huff was looking out of a window of a well-lit room as the responding officer was waving at him. The officer was certain Mr. Huff saw her and recognized her as a Police Officer. Mr. Huff then quickly disappeared from the officer's view. Mr. Huff then suddenly reappeared at the same front window armed with a shotgun. It was at this point one of the responding officers made the decision to discharge their weapon.
The picture accompanying this statement is a still image from a body worn camera that was worn by one of the responding officers. The person holding the shotgun inside the house is Mr. Huff. It should also be noted that the figure to the right is one of our officers knocking at the front door.
We recognize trust in our community hinges on accurate transparency in all critical incidents, especially in officer-involved-shootings. Senate Bill 15-219 is designed to not only provide a thorough investigation, but also transparency. We will release the body worn camera footage when we can do so in a manner that does not impede any future court proceedings.
In this day and age accuracy has never meant more, and the reckless publication of inaccurate information on any critical incident not only causes undue duress and concern for those involved, but also our community.

On Thursday October 10th, 2019, at approximately 11:30
p.m., Aurora Police officers responded to a residence in the 1500 block of
South Bahama Street to investigate an assault when an armed adult male was
encountered by officers. This incident led to an officer-involved-shooting
where one officer discharged a firearm.
The armed male officers encountered has
been identified as Andrew Huff, 04-29-1997 (see attached booking photo).
Huff remains in the care of an area hospital pending release.
The Aurora Police Department will
present the following charges against Huff to the 18th Judicial
District Attorney’s office for activities prior that led to the Aurora Police
Department response to South Bahama Circle:
18-3-203 Assault in the Second Degree,
Felony
18-3-206 Felony Menacing, Felony
18-3-204 3rd Degree Assault, Misdemeanor
The officer-involved-shooting
investigation as required by Senate Bill 15-219 is still underway. Once that
investigation is completed it will be presented by investigators to the 18th
Judicial District Attorney’s office for review.
The officer who was involved remains on
administrative leave per department policy.

The male who was armed with a firearm and shot during the officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 1500 block of South Bahama Street continues being treated and is recovering at a local hospital. No officers were injured.
In connection to this incident, APD is not looking for suspects and there are no threats to the public.
Officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation, as is standard and in accordance with departmental policies.
The officers wore Body Worn Cameras that were collected for review up to and including the Chief of Police.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation and are not available for release today, as investigators still need to obtain statements. Interviews are not expected to be completed until early next week.

On October 12th at 6:41 a.m. a woman was struck
and killed as she crossed East Iliff Avenue near I-225. The vehicle that struck her fled the
scene. Information was gathered from
witnesses and evidence at the scene.
This information was then sent out to all Aurora Police Officers. A few District One patrol officers continued
synthesizing this information and discovered a possible suspect vehicle which was
registered to an apartment complex near the crash location. Due to their continued investigation they found the suspect vehicle.
Subsequent investigation led to them finding the registered owner of the suspect car which was Jackson Donald 11/18/95 from Aurora (see attached booking photo). It was then determined he was the driver of the suspect vehicle
that struck the pedestrian. He was
arrested and charged with Accidents Involving Death or Personal Injuries, a
Class 3 Felony and held for bond.

On Saturday October 12, 2019 the Aurora Police Department Traffic Unit began their investigation into a vehicle fatally striking a pedestrian on East Iliff Avenue at I-225 in the early morning hours.
Through their continued investigation officers located the suspected driver and involved vehicle. Traffic Investigators are continuing their investigation with this newly developed information. Due to this, no further information will be released at this time.
We implore every one to focus on the roadways while driving, and walking. Use extreme caution in low visibility conditions, and slow down when approaching to make turns. On Saturday October 12, 2019 at 6:40 a.m., Aurora Police officers responded to East Iliff Avenue at I-225 for a pedestrian that had been struck crossing the
road. That pedestrian was a woman who was just involved in a two-car
crash prior to being fatally struck. She was in
the process of contacting the other driver from her crash, and had to walk across
westbound East Iliff Avenue to do so. As she
did this, she was struck by a vehicle which fled the scene. The woman was transported to a local hospital
where she died as a result of her injuries.
Evidence gathered at the scene led investigators to believe
that the suspect vehicle is a black 2015 to 2018 four-door Nissan Altima (see below images). It will have damage to the left (driver’s
side) bumper with part of it missing. The
driver’s sideview mirror will also be missing.
