On July 4th, 2019, at 10:29 P.M., Aurora Police Officers responded to the Greensview Apartment Complex located at 16498 East Alameda Place on reports of shots fired.

Upon officers arrival they located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers rendered aid and the victim was transported to an area hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Positive identification of the victim, notification of the next-of-kin and determination of the cause of death will be done by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.

Detectives interviewed a person of interest that was involved in this shooting. That person is a Corrections Officer with the Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC) who was acting as a private citizen during this incident. Scott Mathews Jr (DOB 10-01-1992) was booked into the City of Aurora Detention Center for at least Colorado Revised Statute 18-3-103 Murder in the Second Degree.

Numerous witnesses were interviewed and to maintain the integrity of the investigation no photo is being released at this time since more witnesses need to be contacted.

There currently is no danger to the public and no outstanding suspects.

This is now being investigated by the Aurora Police Major Crimes/Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Denver Police Department and the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office due to the suspect being an employee of DOC.
