SUSPECT IN CUSTODY
Early this morning officers from the Aurora Police Department arrested a man in connection with last nights homicide at Tierra Maya Sports Bar and Grill. Miguel Angel Licona-Ortega (Date of Birth 08/08/1994) was arrested for 1st Degree Murder and was booked into the Aurora Detention Center.

Information previously released on July 29th, 2017:
At 7:06 this evening the Aurora Police Public Safety Communications Division received a report of a shooting at the Tierra Maya Sports Bar and Grill, which is located at 455 Havana Street in Northwest Aurora.
Upon arrival Officers located an adult male outside of the front door of the establishment suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
Investigators from the Major Crimes/Homicide Unit responded to the scene and are following on up leads and interviewing witness to determine what events lead up to the shooting and to identify a potential suspect(s) .
The identity of the victim, who is an adult male in his 20's is not being released at this time and will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office once he has been positively identified and next of kin have been notified.

NNO is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. The goal of the campaign is to make Aurora a safer place.
The Police Area Representative Team for District 2, which serves northeast Aurora has announced the District's plans for the evening. There will be a series of parties at several locations throughout the District from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m.

The Police Area Representative Teams for District 1, which serves West Aurora (areas west of I-225) has announced the District's plans for the evening. The District will be hosting a community gathering at Utah Park (1800 S. Peoria St.) on the northeast corner of the park. The event will include a static display of APD Units and Equipment, food, door prizes, a mobile playground, and obstacle course. New this year, the band The Hits will be performing!
The event starts at 5:30p.m. and goes to 8:00p.m.

A caravan of police officers and department vehicles will be traveling to and visiting NNO events throughout the District. Below is a list of their scheduled stops.

NATURE: Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint- Friday July 21st, 2017
Aurora, Colorado- The Aurora Police Department will be conducting a Stationary Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint on Friday July 21st, 2017 from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. This is part of our continuing commitment to the statewide effort to combat impaired drivers and reduce alcohol and drug related traffic collisions and fatalities. This checkpoint is part of the DUI Checkpoint Colorado program, which kicks off Memorial Day weekend continuing through Labor Day weekend. The checkpoint will be in the area of E. Hampden Ave. and S. Tower Rd.
Motorists passing through the checkpoint will be contacted briefly by an officer who will be looking for signs of intoxication and/or impairment in the driver. The checkpoint should cause only minor inconvenience to traffic along the targeted roadway, and highly visible signage will be posted leading into the checkpoint screening area. Drivers entering a checkpoint are asked to pay close attention to the officers directing traffic through the area. Motorists should also roll down their drivers’ side window as they approach the screening area. This allows for better communication between the motorist and the officer, quicker screening and a shorter delay overall.
The checkpoint is funded by an N.H.T.S.A. (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) grant in partnership with the “Heat is On” campaign and administered by the Colorado Department of Transportation.

On July 5, 2017 at approximately 9:10 a.m., Aurora Police Officers responded to a mobile home park in the 1600 Block of N. Pagosa Way on the report of a disturbance involving a gun. Upon arrival, responding Officers heard what was believed to be a gunshot come from inside a mobile home. An adult male suspect barricaded himself inside of the residence and did not comply with numerous orders to exit the residence.
In the interest of public safety, a reverse 911 call was made to a six-block radius alerting homeowners to stay indoors. Additionally, an Urgent Alert was published on Nextdoor.com warning neighborhood residents of the situation. Officers requested additional resources and eventually Aurora Police's Strategic Response Team (SRT) responded to the scene. Members of the Denver Police Department, Adams County Sheriff’s Office, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, and Greenwood Village Police Department responded to assist by providing additional resources at the scene.
At approximately 4:30 p.m., gunfire was exchanged by an Aurora Police Officer and the suspect. Neither the Officer nor suspect were injured by gunfire in this incident.
The suspect was eventually placed in custody after he surrendered. The suspect showed no obvious signs of trauma but was transported to an area hospital for a medical evaluation. The suspect is not being identified at this time due to the nature of the active and on-going investigation.
The investigation is being handled by the Aurora Police Major Crimes/Homicide Unit in conjunction with the Denver Police Department. This is due to the passage of Senate Bill 219 which requires law enforcement agencies to team up with neighboring agencies to investigate officer involved shootings. As is standard with the occurrence of an Officer-involved shooting, the Officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
This is still an open investigation and therefore there is no further information to provide at this time.

On 07/03/2017 at approximately 7:45 a.m., Aurora Police Officers responded to The Colorado Freedom Memorial located at 756 N. Telluride St. to investigate damage to the memorial. Officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. The investigation into this incident is still active and on-going. No further information is available at this time. The Aurora Police Department is asking anybody with information regarding this incident to contact Detective Eric White at (303)739-6011.
Tipsters can remain anonymous and report information to Metro Denver Crime Stoppers by calling 720-913-7867. Tipsters can be eligible for a reward of up to $2,000.
The Aurora Police Department is also offering a Reward of up to $2,000 from the Aurora Police Reward Fund for information that leads to an arrest and conviction, in the event that this is determined to be a criminal incident.
