The Aurora Police Department will be conducting Stationary Roadside Sobriety Checkpoint on Saturday, May 22, 2021 from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. This is part of our continuing commitment to the statewide effort to combat drunk drivers and reduce alcohol related traffic accidents and fatalities. This checkpoint is part of the>DUI Checkpoint Colorado program, which kicks off Memorial Day weekend, continuing through Labor Day weekend. This checkpoint will be located on South Chambers Road.

Motorists passing through the checkpoint will be contacted briefly by an officer who will be looking for signs of intoxication and/or impairment in the driver. The checkpoint should cause only minor inconvenience to traffic along the targeted roadway, and highly visible signage will be posted leading into the checkpoint screening area. Drivers entering a checkpoint are asked to pay close attention to the officers directing traffic through the area. Motorists should also roll down their drivers' side window as they approach the screening area. This allows for better communication between the motorist and the officer, quicker screening, and a shorter delay overall.

The checkpoint is funded by an N.H.T.S.A. (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) grant in partnership with the "Heat is On" campaign and administered by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

Aurora Police Department’s K9 Cyrus will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Cyrus’ vest will be embroidered with the sentiment “Born to Love-Trained to Serve-Loyal Always”. Delivery is expected within eight to ten weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and NIJ certified.  Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 4,247 vests to K9s in all 50 states at a value of $6.9 million, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies.  K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate.  There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $960 will sponsor one vest.  Each vest has a value of $1,744-$2,283, weighs an average of 4-5 lb., and comes with a five-year warranty.  For more information, or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call 508-824-6978.  Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provides information, lists events, and accepts donations at www.vik9s.org, or you may mail your contribution to P.O. This is your opportunity to learn something new! This week, Miss Tess shows how to make a marshmallow catapult! This STEM activity showcases kinetic energy. When you pull back on the spoon, kinetic energy is transferred from the spoon to the marshmallow, which launches it! How far can you get your marshmallow to fly?

Join us every Tuesday in May as we share new things to learn!

Kids ages 5 - 12, with parent's permission, can submit a photo or video of what they learned this month (a fun fact, a new song, a new language, a new dance - almost anything!) via social media or an email to [email protected] to be entered to win a prize! Last day to enter is Friday, May 28. Click here for more info.

May Family Book Club

Welcome to Family Book Club! This is an exciting club for families who love to read and is appropriate for ages 8-15. The books chosen are always within the 3rd-6th grade level but both younger and older kids have enjoyed them! If your child is younger, I encourage the family to read the book aloud together or listen to the audiobook (if available)!

This month we are reading “Just South of Home” by Karen Strong. Cousins Sarah and Janie, along with two friends, unearth a tragic event in their small Southern town’s history. With their new knowledge, it is up to them to heal their community.
Please note: This novel contains religious themes as well as spooky moments involving ghosts (or haints).
Genre: PARANORMAL MYSTERY

Chapters 20 (Family Meeting) – 28 (A Guilty Liar)

1. What is your favorite 4th of July tradition?
2. Janie and Sarah are learning what makes a real friend. Their old friends weren’t actually good ones. Have you had a similar experience?
3. People in town do not want to hear what Mrs. Whitney has to say. Why do you think they are uncomfortable?
4. Do you think Mrs. Green is so strict and (seemingly) unloving because of her family’s sad history?
5. If you were Sarah, would you forgive Jovita?

Next week read chapters 29 (Witching Hour) – 37 (Home)
We will be having a special virtual event on Monday, May 24 at 5 p.m. to meet the author! Register here to receive WebEx link.

Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Tallyn's Reach Library. Please call 303.627.3050 if you'd like to put one on hold to be picked up at a different branch. Copies are also available through Prospector.

For our May Spotlight, we will be honoring Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month Display

Since 1949, May has served as Mental Health Awareness Month. It is a reminder that mental health is essential to our lives and those living with mental health issues or a mental illness are deserving of care, understanding, and recovery.

What is Mental Health?
Mental health refers to our cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well-being. In simpler terms, mental health affects how we think, behave, and feel—which then can affect our daily lives, relationships, and physical health. Conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, and addiction (as a few examples), can turn a person’s daily life upside down.

Mental Health Is and Isn't

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” The WHO stress that mental health is “more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities.” Peak mental health is about not only avoiding active conditions but also looking after ongoing wellness and happiness.
