Does the city pick up trash?
Private companies provide trash collection for residents in Aurora. Look in the yellow pages under garbage or contact the Tax and Licensing Division for a list of companies licensed to do business in Aurora.

Does Aurora have a recycling program?
The city does not have a public trash collection system, and therefore does not provide recycling services directly. However, most of the private companies that are registered to collect trash in Aurora also provide their customers curbside recycling services. Programs vary. Be sure to check with your hauler to see if they take newspaper, household paper (including junk mail) and cardboard, plastics, aluminum, steel cans or glass products.

Where can I dispose of household chemical wastes?
For several years, the city has conducted an annual Household Chemical Roundup for the collection of recyclable household products, including paint and paint products, used motor oil, antifreeze, vehicle batteries and tires. Check your August utility bill or call 303-739-7250 to obtain information about the Roundup. The best way to deal with hazardous household wastes is not to produce them in the first place. To obtain literature on alternatives to common toxic products used in the home or for information on how to safely handle or dispose of old products, contact Environmental Planning at 303-739-7250.

Where can I recycle used motor oil during other times of the year?
Used motor oil is a reusable resource that can be recycled as an industrial fuel supplement and used as a lubricant. Throwing it away can present an environmental hazard because it may contain a variety of pollutants including organic chemicals and heavy metals, which can contaminate surface and ground water.

Store and transport used oil in a plastic or steel container, away from heat and direct sunlight, with a secure lid. No other products should be mixed with used oil. Check your telephone directory and contact your nearest auto parts store or service station to determine which location accepts used motor oil free of charge.

Where can I recycle used antifreeze during other times of the year?
If you cannot make it to the annual Household Chemical Roundup, DO NOT throw antifreeze into the trash or pour it down the storm sewer or into the septic system.

Antifreeze has toxic properties that are poisonous to humans and animals. Even a small amount can be very harmful to children or pets, which are attracted by its color and sweet taste. The major component of automotive antifreeze can be broken down easily by organisms in a sewage treatment plant. If your home is connected to a sanitary sewer, antifreeze can be poured down the drain or flushed down the toilet. If you are on a septic system, DO NOT pour antifreeze down the drain.

How can I dispose of old or used paint?
If you don't have any future uses for paint, give it to someone who does. Usable paint can be given to neighbors, friends, relatives or local outlets such as community service organizations, theater or graffiti cleanup groups.

If you are unable to donate the paint and can't bring it to the annual Household Chemical Roundup, there is an acceptable way to dispose of latex (water-based) paint. Completely dry out the paint in an area protected from open flame, children, pets, and rain, but that has adequate air flow. When thoroughly dry, the remaining hardened material can be discarded in the regular trash. Leave lids off so that the trash hauler can see that the paint has hardened. To speed the hardening process, spread excess amounts of paint on cardboard or newspaper to use it up, or mix enough "kitty litter" or other absorbent material to solidify it.

Where can I obtain additional recycling information?
Visit www.colorado-recycles.org. The listed businesses may no longer accept certain items. It is recommended that you call each business to verify which recyclables are accepted.
