AURORA, Colo. – Aurora’s Weed & Seed program has been selected by the US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO) to participate in a 13-month technical assistance project. The project aims to strengthen the connection of juvenile crime and reentry, public safety, and community wellness. Aurora is one of nine cities in the US that has been selected for this project.
Located in Original Aurora, the city’s Weed & Seed program is a community-based strategy sponsored by DOJ and overseen by CCDO. It is an innovative and comprehensive multiagency approach to law enforcement, crime prevention, and community revitalization.
Funded by the CCDO, the initiative will provide technical assistance to build the capacity of the selected Weed & Seed communities to enhance their juvenile crime prevention programs. The recipients of the technical assistance will include community- and faith-based partners, reentry committees, neighborhood associations, resident councils, community leaders and advocates, service providers and more.
Assistance to the sites will range from helping to build partnerships and garnering support from the community through education and awareness campaigns, to assisting with abilities to create referral networks or programs. Some of the benefits of the initiative will be providing site-specific “how-to” materials for juvenile prevention program development, exploring resource opportunities for more positive activities, establish relationships with national experts, and sharing best practices and innovative strategies with other sites.
Other selected cities are Vista, Calif.; Brunswick, Ga.; Grove Hall, Mass.; Silver Spring, Md.; Manchester, N.H.; Newburgh, N.Y.; Rochester, N.Y.; and Dallas.
