The Municipal Court function is composed of the Court Administration Department, Judicial Department and the Public Defender's Office. The Court Administration Department oversees the administrative services of the Municipal Court function. The Judicial Department presides over the municipal courts. The primary function of the Public Defender's Office is to represent indigent defendants of the City of Aurora. The Court Administrator, Presiding Judge and Chief Public Defender are appointed by the City Council.


The Municipal Court handles a wide variety of offense violations. Types of tickets handled include traffic violations, zoning, sales tax and building code violations and animal control ordinance violations. Court Administration oversees the administrative services of the Municipal Court. Those operations include the Office of the Court Administrator, Case Management, Court Information Technology, Marshals and Probation.
