The Department intends to seek accreditation from the American Public Works Association (APWA). Achieving accreditation will demonstrate that the department conforms to the best management practices of the APWA. The first step was the development of the department’s mission statement. The mission statement of the department is:
The mission of the Public Works Department is to effectively promote and maintain a high level of economic welfare and quality of life in Aurora through the planning, design, construction, inspection, review, approval and maintenance of Aurora’s transportation and drainage infrastructure.
Goals:
1. Continually improve and maintain the City’s transportation infrastructure as its population grows.
2. Effectively promote citizens, businesses and roadway users with exceptional quality engineering, inspection, development review, floodplain management, right-of-way, traffic and maintenance services.
The next step for accreditation is a self-assessment of the department when compared to almost 600 standards of the APWA. This process is complete and the results are positive. At this time, the department is sharing the results of the self-assessment and welcomes input. The self-assessment is organized in the eighteen chapters in the document links listed below. Please review any or all of the self-assessment chapters. Comments from the public are welcome. Email comments to publicworks@auroragov.org.
