To work in the City of Aurora as a contractor, you will need to obtain the appropriate license for the type of work you will be doing. The Building Division offers testing every Tuesday morning. There are fees associated to becoming a licensed contractor and or supervisor.

There are some types of permits that can be obtained online. To do so you must submit the online agreement. Click here to see what type of permits are available for online services.

ALL Contractor and Supervisor license renewals are now being notified by email. If you want to receive renewal notices you must ensure the email address we have on file is current and your e-mail account set to accept e-mails from AmandaSystem@auroragov.org. Emails from this address is for mass e-mail correspondence and are automated; therefore not a valid email address to correspond to. Failure to renew will result in retesting and associated fees.

INTERNATIONAL CODE COUNCIL (ICC) TESTING

The Building Division is now accepting CC (International Code Council) testing in lieu of testing at our facility:
-National Standard Class A 614-N (International Building Code - IBC)
-Class B (2006) 615-N (International Building Code - IBC)
-Class C 616-N and Roofing, (International Residential Code - IRC)
-National Standard Shingle Roofing 358-N International Residential Code (IRC)
-National Standard Roofing Contractor/Subcontractor (2006) 764-N – (International Building Code - IBC)

NOTE: ICC has many different tests. Currently, the above are the only licenses accepted by the City of Aurora.

Contractors are still required to obtain a supervisors license and pay the required fee as well as the appropriate contractor license (see license fee) when pulling permits for the City of Aurora.

http://www.iccsafe.org/certification/ is the primary link to ICC for testing information. Select “Contractor Trades Testing”, then “ICC National Contractor Trades Exam Bulletin” for a description of available test(s).

If you want to schedule a test, contact Pearson Vue computer Testing Center http://www2.iccsafe.org/contractor. You must have the appropriate test number before scheduling.

To schedule for a test, please call 303-739-7420. Please bring the completed license application wit you the day of your test. The Building Division does not sell the International Code Books. It is an open book test, and we will provide the material needed for your test to use. If there are questions associated with your test on city code you can reference City Code Building and Building Regulations or go to www.municodes.com. The Utility Spec book can be purchased through the Water Department and the Roadway Spec book can be purchased Public Works.

When a building permit has been issued for any construction within the city, the supervisor listed on the permit becomes the link between the Building Inspection Division and the Owner/Contractor. How he handles the coordination of work and inspections will determine the workflow to a successful completion and the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) or release for use of the structure. The Construction Supervisor.

It is the responsibility of the license holder to know the City of Aurora Buildings and Building Regulations.

 

After successfully passing the test, you are issued a supervisor’s license. You can obtain your contractors license or delay this license until you need to pull a permit.

Following are some important things to remember about being a license holder.

  • The Supervisor’s license is renewable every three years.
  • The Contractor’s license is renewable every year.
  • It is the responsibility of the license holder to monitor the renewal date.
  • Failure to renew your Supervisor’s license prior to expiration will result in re-testing.
  • Expiration date for Contractor and Supervisor’s license is based off of the date the test was taken.
  • Notify the Building Code Division of address or name change within five (5) days in writing on company letterhead. The licensed supervisor must sign for this request.
