The Hiring Process

The Aurora Civil Service Commission determines the application process and testing requirements. The following is an overview of the steps necessary to gain employment as an Officer with the Aurora Police Department.

  • You must obtain a Civil Service Commission police application “on-line” and fully complete the application, then submit it to the Commission prior to the deadline.  The on-line application process may be completed at your leisure via your own computer access or at the City of Aurora Municipal Center located at 15151 East Alameda Parkway in Aurora, Colorado.
  • The Civil Service Commission then reviews to confirm that the applicant meets the minimum technical and educational hiring qualifications.
  • The Civil Service Commission will notify all applicants who pass the application review by phone and or invitation. At that time, the applicant will be given instructions on the testing process and schedule.
  • The applicant must first successfully complete a fitness test and then a written examination will be administered.
  • After the successful completion of the fitness test and written examination the applicant is then scheduled for an oral board interview. Lateral Officers do not take an oral exam but are instead interviewed by the Police Department's Executive Staff.
  • The Oral board interview will help determine skill levels in verbal communication, problem solving and overall demeanor. Applicants who pass the oral interview will be scheduled for the following:

    A Job Suitability Assessment
The JSA consists of two parts: a series of written tests and an interview with a certified psychologist.

    A Polygraph Exam
The test covers questions on criminal activity, driving history, drug usage, truthfulness, integrity and employment history.

    A Drug Screening
Applicants will be required to submit to a controlled substance screening during the process.

  • After the above process is complete, a comprehensive background investigation is conducted. This investigation includes, but is not limited to, the overall conduct and character of the applicant, driving history, criminal history, illegal drug use or experimentation, employment background, and financial history.
  • At this point, the Aurora Civil Service Commission conducts a final review.
  • And finally, a "conditional" job offer is made and the applicant is then required to undergo a medical exam given by a licensed practitioner.
  • Expect this process to take approximately 4-6 months

Once you have made it through all of the steps, you have completed the process. The extensive process helps us to maintain public trust - which is paramount to the success of the Aurora Police Department.
