Basic Sign Regulations Sign Code for Businesses
|
|
|
Any owner or occupant, who erects a permanent sign, must obtain a sign permit from the city of Aurora.
Only wall, window or ground signs are allowed.
- Total Number of Signs Allowed
A total of five signs are allowed per business. This includes permanent signs located in the window.
The total amount of sign area for each business depends upon the amount of building frontage for each business.
Signs must be placed 10 feet back from all property lines; with the exception of some wall signs located on buildings.

Banners/Fabric Signs.
No more than two signs are permitted, four events per calendar year; each event not to exceed fifteen consecutive days per address. Events can be combined for a total of 60 days. The maximum total of sign area is 200 square feet; banners are permitted in non-residential zones only.

Temporary Window Signs.
Temporary window signs may not exceed 50 percent coverage per windowpane and can be displayed for 90 days. Sign(s) must be located in the space occupied by the business. A combination of both temporary and permanent sign(s) cannot exceed 50 percent coverage per pane. Maximum total of temporary sign area is 200 square feet. The name of the business is considered a permanent sign(s) and must have an approved sign permit.

Balloons/Inflatable Devices.
Balloon or inflatable devices can only be displayed once a year for a maximum of 72 consecutive hours.

|
Pennants
Pennants can be displayed once a year for a maximum of 30 consecutive days and must be 10 feet back from all property lines. A Special Use Permit must be obtained from the Zoning Division.

Prohibited Signs
|
|
|

Portable Signs
All portable signs and A-Frame signs on private property and public property are prohibited and may be removed by the City without notice. “Portable is considered any sign not permanently attached to a structure or the ground.

|
Vehicle Signs
Parking of vehicles for the sole purpose of providing advertisement or directing people to any business is prohibited.
|
|
|
|

|
Moving or Flashing Signs.
Any sign that moves, flashes or fluctuates is prohibited.
|

|
|
|
Temporary Development Signs
|
|
|
Only licensed sign contractors are authorized to submit a permit application. Permits are valid for a total of 12 consecutive months.
- Maximum of two signs permitted per development.
- Sign must be located on the same lot as the permitted use or the same enterprise zoned lot.
- Total sign area shall not exceed 200 square feet.
- Maximum height of 12 feet above grade.
- Minimum setback of 10 feet from any property line.
- All signs must be maintained and structurally sound.
- Must comply with city standards.

Off-Site Development Directional Sign Kiosks
|
|
|
Only licensed sign contractors are authorized to submit a permit application. Permits are valid January 1 through December 31.
- Maximum of eight signs permitted per development.
- Maximum of 16 square feet for single development sign.
- Maximum of 32 square feet for multiple development double-faced sign.
- Maximum height of 12 feet above grade.
- Located at least 600 feet from another off-site sign kiosk.
- Located at least 120 feet from an intersection (Traffic Engineering).
- Must display an identification plate.
- Must have written approval from the property owner.
- All signs must be maintained and structurally sound.
- Must comply with City standards.
