Basic Sign Code FAQ’S

 

Sign Regulations can be found in Aurora Municipal Code Chapter 146, Article 16

 
 

Animated Signs

Any sign or part of a sign may not change physical position by flashing, blinking or fluctuating. This does not apply to temporary decorations associated with a national or religious holiday, time and temperature displays or reader boards in which displayed messages change less than once every 30 minutes.

 

Banners/Fabric Signs

Banners and/or Fabric Signs are not allowed in residential areas. Businesses may display no more than two fabric signs and they must be affixed to a wall, window, pole or on the ground. Fabric Signs may not exceed 200 square feet in size or be displayed more than 60 days per calendar year.

 

Flags

Any flag that is not attached to an approved flagpole is a “fabric sign” per Chapter 146-1610.

 

Garage Sale Signs

Permit not required. Four signs permitted for advertisement. Signs must have the address of the property having a garage sale and cannot exceed 2’ x 3’. Signs may not be placed out before 6 p.m. on the Thursday preceding the event and must be removed prior to 7 a.m. Monday concluding the event. Signs cannot be placed in State right-of-way, City Parks, medians or on traffic control devices.

 

Home Occupation

Signs for home businesses including Day Care Homes are prohibited.

 

Inflatable Devices

May be displayed one time per calendar year per address, not to exceed 72 consecutive hours.

 

Off-Site Development Directional Signs

Permit required. Limited to a period of not more than 12 consecutive calendar months, must be grounded, and no more 8 per residential development. Height and location restrictions apply. Contact Neighborhood Support for further information.

 

Open House Signs

No more than four signs allowed per open house including the sign on the premises. Not to be placed in rights-of-way or in any manner that would impair vehicular or pedestrian traffic/visibility. Signs cannot be more than 6 square feet on any one side. A permit is not required.

 

Pennants

Permitted with a Temporary Use Permit for a maximum of 30 consecutive days per calendar year. Cannot be attached to utility poles.

 

Political Signs

Permit not required. Cannot be erected anywhere in the City more than 30 days prior to the election date for which they apply and must be removed within 7 days following the date of the election. (Mail ballot election signs cannot be erected more than 45 days prior to the date of the election for which they apply). Political signs may be no larger than six square feet in area. Placement of signs cannot be in any public right-of way which includes street medians, visibility triangles and highway/street shoulders as well as on any public property which includes parks, public buildings, bike paths or covering other public signs, directional or regulatory signs. Political signs may not be attached to any traffic control device. To place a political sign on a vacant property requires the permission of the property owner before posting.

 

Portable/A-Frame Signs

Prohibited and may be removed by the City without notice. “Portable” is considered any sign not permanently attached to a structure or the ground.

Exception: Ground signs with Special Use Permit can be displayed in the City right-of-way for three separate 9-day events per calendar year.

 

Roof Signs

Prohibited except those designated as permitted within the Colfax Avenue Sign Preservation code.

 

Temporary Window Signs

Permit not required. Each sign cannot occupy more than 50% of each windowpane, and cannot be animated. Any window sign displaying the business name is classified as a permanent window sign. Temporary window signs may not be displayed for more than 90 days.

 

Vehicle Signs

Advertisement for businesses or activity located on the same or nearby premises is prohibited. Vehicles displayed for sale may not be parked in a public right-of-way or on private property, which is visible from public property.
